BEDFORD, OH — On Friday, September 20, 2024, the Bedford community came together to honor the memory of US Army Sgt. John P. Ryhter in a solemn procession from Johnson Romito Funeral Home to Bedford Cemetery. The procession commenced around 1:30 PM and included a brief stop at Bedford Commons, located at 730 Broadway, allowing residents to pay their respects to the fallen soldier.

Sgt. Ryhter, a Bedford native who lost his life during the Korean War, was laid to rest with full military honors after his remains were recently identified through DNA testing. Previously buried in Hawaii, his return to his hometown marked a poignant moment for family, friends, and community members.

The Parks & Recreation Department facilitated transportation for those wishing to attend the procession from Ellenwood Center, ensuring that many could join in the tribute. Participants met at the Bedford Commons or lined the route along Broadway Avenue to pay their respects.

The event underscored the community’s commitment to honoring its heroes and remembering their sacrifices.
