BEDFORD, OH — As reported by Dave DeNatale with WKYC Studios and detailed in a city press release, after a prolonged legal battle lasting more than two years, the City of Bedford and University Hospitals (UH) have reached a settlement regarding the former UH Bedford Medical Center site. The agreement marks a significant step forward for the city, ensuring both financial compensation and the opportunity for redevelopment.

Under the settlement, University Hospitals will pay the city $2.1 million and transfer ownership of the former hospital site, encompassing over 11 acres and multiple buildings, without restrictive covenants on future use. Additionally, UH will continue to operate some medical services at the Bedford medical office building while committing to remove hazardous materials and prepare the property for redevelopment within 180 days.

Bedford Mayor Stanley Koci hailed the agreement as a major victory for residents. “This outcome is a testament to the city’s unwavering commitment to advancing the best interests of our residents. We fought for the best outcome, ensuring that Bedford will have the resources and opportunities for redevelopment,” Koci stated.

The closure of UH Bedford Medical Center in August 2022 had a profound impact on the community, particularly on elderly, economically disadvantaged, and minority populations in the southeast side of Cuyahoga County. At the time, the facility was Bedford’s largest employer, supporting nearly 1,000 jobs and generating $1 million annually in tax revenue. Its sudden closure left a significant void in local healthcare access, spurring city leaders to take legal action to address concerns over racial and economic disparities in healthcare delivery.

City Manager Michael Mallis expressed optimism about the future of the site: “This agreement opens doors for redevelopment and provides Bedford an opportunity to reestablish healthcare resources for all residents on the southeast side of Cuyahoga County. We can begin transforming the site into a valuable asset for our community.”

The settlement was approved by Bedford City Council and will be formally filed in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. The city plans to issue a Request for Proposals, inviting healthcare providers and developers to present plans for the site’s redevelopment.

Both Mayor Koci and Mallis thanked Judge Steven Gall of the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court for his guidance throughout the negotiations.
