Opening This Fall

Bedford residents can look forward to a fresh green space downtown as the city prepares to open its new park expansion in the fall of 2025. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the occasion, with details to be announced once the final pavilion and swing trellis arrive from the manufacturer.

A Longtime Vision Realized

The project has been years in the making. When the Commons was gifted to Bedford decades ago, it was always intended as a public gathering place. City officials began discussing ways to expand the space as early as 2007, but budget challenges put the idea on hold. With recent grant funding, the vision of connecting Bedford’s historic downtown and public Commons to the Bedford Reservation finally became a reality.

Features to Enjoy

The redesigned space will include more than 3,500 plantings and trees, a pavilion, trellis swings, and a central water feature. A brick walkway modeled after the existing public square will tie the space together, while sandstone blocks and steps provide built-in seating. Electrical hookups have also been added along South Park to support vendors and food trucks during future events.

Supporting Community & Business

City leaders believe the new park will serve as both a community hub and an economic boost for the Historic District. In 2024, the Bedford Reservation saw over 1 million visitors. Even a small portion of those stopping downtown could mean significant support for local businesses.

Looking Ahead

Bedford has applied for an additional $500,000 state grant to extend a pedestrian and bike pathway from Willis Street to Viaduct Park and the Reservation. Officials are also considering new programming and events to make the park a centerpiece for community life.
