As residents begin planning spring projects, the City of Bedford reminds homeowners that zoning regulations apply to sheds, detached garages, and other accessory buildings.
In Bedford, accessory structures are permitted only in rear yards and may not be placed in front or side yards. These buildings must take up less than 30 percent of the required rear yard space and may not exceed 15 feet in height.
Setback requirements also apply. Accessory buildings must be located at least 3 feet from side property lines, 6 feet from rear property lines, and 10 feet from any other structure on the same lot. Structures connected to the main home by a breezeway must still meet all zoning and setback requirements.
Planning ahead can help residents avoid permit issues or costly changes once construction begins.
