On March 15, the City of Bedford celebrates the anniversary of an important milestone in its history. On that date in 1837, Bedford was officially incorporated as a village, marking the beginning of the community’s formal local government and civic identity.
The area that would become Bedford had been settled earlier in the early 1800s, when families began establishing farms and homes near the banks of Tinkers Creek. The creek provided water power for early mills and helped support the small but growing settlement. Over time, Bedford developed into an important community within the Connecticut Western Reserve.
In the decades that followed, Bedford continued to grow. The arrival of transportation routes, including connections to the Ohio & Erie Canal and later railroads, helped support local businesses and industry. Sandstone quarries, mills, and small shops contributed to the city’s early economy and helped establish Bedford as a hub for nearby communities.
Many of the places residents recognize today reflect that long history. Bedford’s historic downtown, centered around the Bedford Commons, has served as the heart of the community for generations. The surrounding neighborhoods, historic homes, and nearby natural landmarks such as Bedford Reservation and the scenic Tinkers Creek Gorge continue to make the city a unique place to live.
While much has changed since 1837, Bedford continues to be shaped by the people who call it home. Generations of residents have built their lives here, creating neighborhoods, traditions, and shared memories that remain part of the city’s identity today.
This year marks 189 years since Bedford’s incorporation, and next year the community will celebrate a major milestone — Bedford’s 190th anniversary in 2027.
