As warmer weather returns to Bedford, many residents begin cleaning out garages, basements, attics, and closets in preparation for yard and garage sale season. Before setting up tables and price tags, residents should be aware that the City of Bedford requires a free permit for most garage and yard sales.
According to the City, a permit must be obtained before holding a sale of personal property such as a garage or yard sale. While the permit is free, there are several rules residents should keep in mind when planning their event.
Sales may not last longer than six days within any two-week period. Sale hours are also restricted to between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
The City limits residents to two garage or yard sale permits per year, and those permits must be spaced at least six months apart. In addition, all items offered for sale must belong to the resident at the address where the sale is being held.
The rules are intended to help balance neighborhood activity while preventing ongoing commercial-style sales in residential areas.
There is one exception to the permit requirement. Residents may occasionally sell five or fewer personally owned items without obtaining a permit, as long as the sale is not connected to any business activity.
For residents planning a larger cleanout or neighborhood sale, obtaining a permit ahead of time can help avoid potential issues and ensure the event follows City regulations.
Additional information and permit details can be found through the City of Bedford.
