As reported by Cleveland.com news, Bedford City School District officials and community leaders gathered Saturday to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new Bedford High School, marking the beginning of construction on a project years in the making.
The approximately 175,000-square-foot school will be built on the existing high school campus and is scheduled to open for the 2028-2029 school year.
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together district officials and staff, Board of Education members, local government representatives from the district’s four communities, residents and representatives from GPD, the architectural firm working on the project.
The new high school is planned as a centerpiece of the district’s ongoing facilities improvements, with spaces designed to serve both students and the broader community.
Plans include expanded career-technical education facilities, including culinary arts and cosmetology programs. The cosmetology program will feature a separate public entrance where community members can receive hair and nail services, while the culinary arts program will include a café and restaurant.
The two-story building will also feature a 560-seat auditorium and a main gymnasium with approximately 1,050 bleacher seats. A separate athletic wing will include the gym, weight room and space for the district’s exercise-management program.
The building’s main entrance will face south, while portions of the school and several career-technical programs will have a presence along Northfield Road. Exterior brickwork, colors and other design elements are intended to complement the district’s new middle school.
Inside, plans call for large windows, natural light, wood accents and open gathering spaces. A central corridor will connect the gymnasium and auditorium, while a student dining area will overlook an outdoor courtyard and offer several seating options.
The auditorium is expected to become the district’s primary performance venue and will feature upgraded acoustics.
Once completed, the new Bedford High School is intended to provide students with a modern learning environment while adding educational, athletic, performing arts and career-training spaces that can also serve the surrounding community.
