October is here, and all around Bedford we’re seeing ghosts, spiders, witches, and plenty of pretend cobwebs appearing on porches and in windows. I enjoy a good Halloween decoration as much as anyone, but there’s one kind of cobweb I’d rather not have — the kind nobody put there on purpose!
This month, let’s go hunting for the dust and cobwebs hiding in some of the places we don’t always think to clean.
Start by looking up. The corners where walls meet ceilings are favorite hiding places for wispy webs. Check around crown molding, ceiling vents, smoke detectors, and the tops of door and window frames. A long-handled duster makes quick work of these areas.
While you’re up there, take a peek at the tops of your kitchen cabinets. If your cabinets don’t reach the ceiling, you may discover quite a layer of dust and cooking residue. The tops of tall refrigerators and bookcases deserve a look, too.
Now let’s go lower. Dust loves baseboards, furniture legs, and the spaces beneath radiators and cabinets. Run your vacuum attachment along these forgotten edges, especially in rooms that haven’t had furniture moved recently.
Don’t forget some of the smaller hiding spots. Lampshades, picture frames, artificial plants, curtain rods, and the tops of wall-mounted televisions can collect more dust than you might expect. Even the little ridges on doors and cabinet fronts can become surprisingly grimy.
And here’s one that’s easy to miss: look behind the toilet and around bathroom pipes. They’re certainly not glamorous cleaning jobs, but dust and hair have a sneaky way of finding them.
You don’t have to tackle the whole house in one afternoon. Pick a room, look high, look low, and clean a few places that aren’t normally on your list.
After all, a few cobwebs around the front porch might make things delightfully spooky this October. Finding one dangling over the dinner table? That’s a different story entirely!
