When the snow starts falling, many people think it’s time to hibernate—but not us outdoor lovers! Bedford transforms into a peaceful winter wonderland, and one of the most rewarding ways to enjoy it is with a winter hike and animal tracking adventure.

Bedford Reservation’s trails, like the All-Purpose Trail or the Sagamore Creek Loop, stay open year-round and are absolutely stunning under a fresh blanket of snow. The quiet woods, frosted trees, and crisp air make for a calming outdoor experience.

One of the coolest winter activities? Animal tracking! After a snowfall, it’s easy to spot tracks from deer, rabbits, squirrels, and even foxes. It’s a fun and educational scavenger hunt for kids and adults alike—bring a nature journal or field guide to help identify the prints.

If snow is deep, consider trying snowshoeing—it’s beginner-friendly and opens up more of the trails, even when hiking gets tricky.

Always use caution when hiking in wintery or icy conditions. Wear proper footwear with good grip, dress in layers, and bring walking poles or cleats if needed. Trails near creeks or ravines can get slippery, especially after freeze-thaw cycles, so take your time and be mindful of your footing.

So don’t let the cold keep you in. Bundle up, grab a buddy (or your camera), and enjoy the winter magic that Bedford’s trails have to offer!

As the leaves finish falling and the air turns crisp, November offers a quieter kind of beauty outdoors. While many people start heading indoors this time of year, it’s actually the perfect time to try something peaceful and grounding: a forest sound walk.

What’s a sound walk? It’s a mindful, slow-paced walk where the goal isn’t exercise or a destination—it’s listening. And Bedford Reservation is the perfect place to do it. As the forest settles into late autumn, the usual bustle quiets down, making the sounds of nature more noticeable. You might hear the crunch of your boots on the leaves, the chatter of squirrels preparing for winter, or the distant call of birds cutting through the still air.

Choose a quiet trail like the section near the Tinker’s Creek Gorge Scenic Overlook or around the Alexander Road Trailhead. Walk slowly, take breaks, and close your eyes from time to time to really tune in. Leave your headphones at home and let the natural soundtrack of Bedford calm your mind.

Bring a journal if you’d like to reflect afterward, or even a thermos of tea to sip while you sit and listen. It’s a simple activity, but one that can refresh your spirit before the holiday rush begins.

So this November, bundle up, slow down, and let the quiet of the Bedford woods remind you how much beauty there is in stillness.

October is one of my favorite months to get outside and enjoy the dazzling fall colors, and there’s no need to travel far—Bedford Reservation offers some amazing trails and overlooks right in our backyard.

Start your adventure on the Bedford Reservation All Purpose Trail. This paved 7.6-mile trail winds through the reservation’s woodlands and connects to several scenic areas. Along the way, stop by Bridal Veil Falls Scenic Overlook and the Tinker’s Creek Gorge Scenic Overlook for stunning views of autumn leaves and peaceful water features.

For a more adventurous route, check out the Bedford Singletrack Trail, a multi-loop system that weaves through the forest. While designed for mountain biking, it’s also walkable and a great way to explore less-traveled parts of the park.

Another gem is the Sagamore Creek Loop, which you can access from the Alexander Road Trailhead. This trail offers a quieter hike through ravines, small waterfalls, and steep wooded slopes—a perfect place to immerse yourself in fall color.

Don’t forget your camera or phone! The lighting in October is ideal for photos, and the vibrant reds, oranges, and golds make for stunning backdrops. Whether you’re hiking solo, with family, or just out to breathe in some crisp autumn air, you’ll find that Bedford’s trails are full of beauty and inspiration this time of year.

So grab your boots, a warm drink, and get outside—fall is calling!

Hey Bedford neighbors! September is one of the best times to go camping—cool nights, colorful leaves, and fewer bugs make for a peaceful escape into nature. Whether you’re pitching a tent at a nearby campground or heading into the Bedford Reservation for a rustic retreat, here are a few tips to make your fall camping adventure safe, cozy, and unforgettable.

1. Layer Up: Temperatures can swing fast in September. Pack layers—think thermal shirts, hoodies, and a warm, insulated jacket. Don’t forget thick socks and a hat for sleeping!

2. Prep for Damp Conditions: Autumn mornings bring dew, and rain is always possible. Bring a tarp for under your tent and another for overhead if the forecast looks sketchy. Waterproof boots are a must, especially if you’re hiking in Bedford’s wooded trails.

3. Bring the Right Gear: A 3-season sleeping bag is perfect for September camping. Add a sleeping pad or insulated mat for extra warmth. A headlamp, lantern, or string lights will make camp setup and late-night s’mores runs easier.

4. Enjoy Seasonal Foods: Pack hearty meals like chili or foil-packet potatoes. Apples and cider make for great fall-friendly treats. Just be sure to store all food securely—wildlife is active in our local parks!

5. Take in the Scenery: Bedford’s trails are beginning to show their fall colors. Take a morning hike or sunset walk to soak it all in.

So grab your gear, invite a friend or two, and enjoy the fresh fall air. Happy camping, Bedford!

Hey Bedford friends! August is the perfect time to shake things up and push yourself beyond your usual routine. If you’re ready to break out of your comfort zone and have some fun doing it, try creating your own Unpredictable Route Challenge right here in Bedford!

The idea is simple: choose a starting point—like the Bedford Reservation entrance or Viaduct Park—and let spontaneity guide your adventure. Flip a coin at each trail fork, draw your next turn from a hat, or use a random number generator to decide how many steps or minutes to go before changing direction. It’s a great way to explore areas you may normally pass by and a fun way to get your body and mind moving in new ways.

This challenge is perfect for walking, jogging, or biking, and you can make it as chill or as intense as you want. Bring a friend or go solo with a journal to jot down what you discover—new paths, hidden overlooks, or maybe even a surprise sense of confidence.

To make it even more rewarding, add small dares like “take a different trail than usual,” “climb a hill you usually skip,” or “say hello to five fellow trail users.” It’s about more than just physical movement—it’s about mental growth and breaking free from the expected.

So this August, take the challenge. Try something new, get a little lost, and discover just how much Bedford still has to surprise you with.
