“Zombieggs” (Steve Sandly) in full costume for the Zombie Walk. He’s walked in over 100 zombie-themed fundraisers.

Bedford Commons was transformed into the gathering place for the 8th annual Cleveland Pagan Pride Days this past weekend.

The Undead Walking

The three-day event kicked off on Friday with the second annual Zombie Walk, a fundraiser for the Southeast Clergy Food Bank and Crossroads Universal, the group behind Cleveland Pagan Pride. Participants showed up in makeup and costumes or had their zombie face put on by artists Toni Kelly, Tammy Hess, Rachael Resnick, and Dennis Baker at the square.

Zombies and zombie hunters (and even one Ghost Buster) began arriving at 5p and signed up for the walk with a $5 donation, split between the two charities. Attendees could also participate in Zombie

Karaoke, choosing from a variety of songs– not just those associated with zombies. At 7:15p, the zombies began their walk from the square down to Los Gallos and back, making the lap twice. Passersby paused and took pictures as the group ambled past.

Rituals and Wares on the Square

On Saturday and Sunday, 50 vendors packed the square, selling goods and offering services such as natural health and beauty products, herbs, gemstones, Tarot and fortune readings. Workshops were also held throughout the weekend. Practices explored included Wiccan, Druidry, and Santeria.

A number of acts provided an eclectic mixture of music, dance, and ambient noise for the mystical festival. Demonstrations of Tai Chi and blacksmithing provided a look into practices long associated with magick. Several groups and speakers led group rituals, providing a hands on experience for practitioners and the curious alike. And for the younger crowd, there were crafts and movie screenings

Cleveland Pagan Pride attracts thousands of people every year and encourages harmony and peace through both the nature of the event and the religions and spiritualities that it incorporates. When asked about his favorite part of the festival, artist Dennis Baker, a member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, cited the acceptance in and surrounding the event. “People of Pagan spirituality don’t get that acceptance,” he said.

Cleveland Pagan Pride Days is perhaps the most unique festival held in Bedford every year and often has the highest attendance. Estimates put last year’s number of attendees at about 4,000. Those who come to the festival are also asked to donate 2 non-perishable food items or toiletries which would go to the Southeast Clergy Food Bank, and these donations totaled 2,000 pounds for the 2016 festival. While this festival focuses on celebrating and educating people on Pagan beliefs and rituals, it is also a great way to serve the surrounding community.

Car break-ins seem to be growing more frequent in Bedford in recent months. Here are a few tips to keep thieves out of your vehicle.

Lock It Up

This seems obvious, but testimony from theft victims too often starts with, “Well, my car was unlocked…” Sometimes we forget, because we’re in a rush to get in the house after a long day of work, or maybe we have groceries to bring in and our hands are full. Make it a habit to check and even double check that your car doors are locked. This will probably the first thing a thief will check. This goes for rolling up your windows too.

Garages are Cars’ Best Friends

If you have a garage, put your car in it and make sure the door is closed. It’s much tougher to burgle a car that’s out of sight, not to mention behind a rather large and noisy door. Bonus points if your garage is electric only (no exterior handle) or can be locked.

Keep It Out of Sight

There are multiple windows on vehicles, the number varying with the type of car. Even tinted windows only offer so much protection from those peeking in to look for valuables.

If you’re going to be keeping them in your vehicle, hide electronics, shopping bags, purses, wallets, and other valuables in the trunk, center console, door compartments, and glove compartments to keep them from prying eyes. If there are windows into the trunk, cargo covers often come standard or can be added easily to block contents from view.

Cover Your Tracks

Along the same lines as keeping valuable out of sight, also keep any hint of valuables hidden. An iPhone charger is a sign that there could be an iPhone in the vehicle. Receipts left on the seat could tip a thief off to those shopping bags stored in the trunk. Any little item that is linked to something of value makes your car more vulnerable, even loose change.

Hit the Lights

Keeping your car in a well-lit space is a great crime deterrent. Parking under a streetlight if possible is a good course of action. If there’s no overnight parking on your street, or if there are no well-lit areas to park, adding exterior lighting to your property is also a great option. Motion detection lights are encouraged.

These easy steps are a good start for protecting your vehicle from sticky fingers and broken windows.

Over the weekend, the Cee Ray Motel on the corner of Solon and Northfield Roads was run through by a white GMC Acadia.

Reports indicate that around 2:30 am, the SUV was traveling north over the Northfield bridge at 90-100mph. At this speed, the slight curve to maintain the course on Northfield became difficult to navigate and the vehicle hopped the curb, hitting the building and taking down a portion of the wall that exposed two rooms. Two people inside the vehicle and one person inside the hotel were injured and taken to the hospital. The conditions and identities of the three individuals are still undisclosed.

This accident also impacted one of the most iconic images in Bedford: the vintage Cee Ray Motel sign. The bright blue triangular sign is a local landmark, a bright visage for an otherwise nondescript brown brick building and the only motel in the city. This sign stood in the path of the minivan as it sped toward the building and now lays in a mangled heap on the lawn of the motel. The recklessness of the driver which resulted in three casualties and the damage caused to the building itself is made all the more tragic by the destruction of this vibrant piece of Bedford’s Identity.

The iconic Cee Ray sign

The gaping hole in the Cee Ray has since been boarded up, and there are supplies for repairs sitting outside. Nothing has been reported regarding the sign, however. From the looks of the pile of metal that remains, repair is out of the question. Is a duplicate a viable solution, a brand new sign made to mimic the classic charm of the old? Or will an updated sign take its place,  a more modern design to fit the changing times and identity of Bedford? Or perhaps it will not be replaced at all. Bedford residents can only wait and see.

July 26th– About halfway through the summer, Blue Groove and Liz entertained at Bedford Public Square for this week’s Party in the Park.

A sultry female voice floated over the Square on a cool summer breeze, backed by guitar, organ, and drums– a simple jazz quartet. The modest crowd was scattered across the lawn, ranging from elementary to elderly. They sat in wheel chairs and lawn chairs, on benches and on the grass. The band played a mix of many genres of music, and a variety of tempos

(left to right) Stella, a 15-year resident of Bedford, Mary from Cleveland, and Mary from Northfield line dancing to the classics.

. Songs included “Jump Jive An’ Wail” by Louis Prima and “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, “Temptation”, made popular by Bing Crosby, and many others ranging from early jazz standards to iconic Motown hits.

A few ladies were on their feet, line dancing to almost every song, and one young man stood at the base of the gazebo steps, grooving and clapping to the tunes. To add to the picturesque summer evening, the smell of hot dogs on the grill wafted from Bedford Falls Cafe. People purchased sweet treats from the ice cream truck parked in front of the old church and grabbed bags of popcorn popped in front of the historical society.

Throughout the event raffle tickets were sold for items donated by local businesses, council members, and even the mayor himself– flowers from Carol James Florist; gift bags from T-Jay’s Collision Center; a lawn chair from Councilman Don Saunders; and several bottles of wine from Mayor Stan Koci, among others. At the end of the night, these went to a number of people in the crowd, and proceeds raised from the sale went back to support future Parties in the Park. The event ended as night fell.

Next week’s Party in the Park will begin at 6:30 pm to accommodate an earlier sunset. The featured artist will be Logan Wells.
