Bedford, OH — Bedford City School District is proud to announce its official membership in the newly formed United Athletic Conference (UAC)—a dynamic, regionally aligned athletic league designed to enhance competitive opportunities and strengthen collaboration among neighboring districts.

The UAC brings together six school districts that share a deep commitment to athletic excellence, student development, and community pride:

  • Bedford City Schools
  • Warrensville Heights City Schools
  • Garfield Heights City Schools
  • Maple Heights City Schools
  • Brush (South Euclid–Lyndhurst Schools)
  • Youngstown City Schools

The formation of the UAC represents a significant step forward for high school athletics in Northeast Ohio. The conference was built on a shared vision to promote competitive balance, reduce excessive travel, increase visibility for student-athletes, and create meaningful and lasting rivalries across the region.

A New Era for Bearcat Athletics

Membership in the UAC will provide Bedford athletes with expanded opportunities across all sports, consistent scheduling, and enhanced competitive alignment with districts of similar size and athletic profile.

“This new league marks an exciting chapter for Bearcat Athletics,” said Joseph Commander, Athletic Director of Bedford City Schools. “The UAC positions our student-athletes for success by providing strong competition, increased exposure, and a supportive network of partner schools committed to excellence.”

Collaboration, Alignment, and Student-Centered Purpose

The United Athletic Conference was shaped through months of collaboration between athletic directors and district leaders. Its structure prioritizes:

  • Competitive equity across all sports
  • Regional alignment, reducing travel time for athletes and families
  • High-quality athletic experiences for students
  • Community-building rivalries and shared student engagement
  • Unified operational standards and governance

“Joining the UAC reflects our commitment to creating the best possible environment for our student-athletes,” said Dr. Cassandra Johnson, Superintendent of Bedford City School District. “This partnership strengthens our athletic programming and reinforces our belief in opportunity and community pride.”

Next Steps for Families & Athletes

The UAC will begin conference play in the upcoming athletic year. Schedules, branding elements, and league-event details will be shared as they are finalized.

Bedford City Schools looks forward to entering this new era of athletic competition with determination, unity, and Bearcat pride.

Graciela Emerson recently completed her third year as a participant in the Cleveland Clinic Brain Study, a first-of-its-kind study that will lead to future breakthroughs to help identify, prevent and treat neurological diseases. Launched in 2022, the project aims to follow 20,000 healthy individuals for 20-plus years.

Emerson’s decision to join the study was personal. Her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease several years ago. While medications are available to manage symptoms and slow disease progression, there is no cure.

“I hope that by participating in the Brain Study I can help improve care – maybe not for my father, but for younger generations,” says Emerson, and I hope others will join me in this effort.

One in six people lives with a neurological disorder such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. While people can make lifestyle changes to decrease the risk of developing these conditions, doctors still can’t pinpoint why some people get them and others don’t.

“With this study, we have the potential to discover causes of neurological disorders,” says Andre Machado, MD, PhD, chief of Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute and a leader of the Brain Study. “Our hope is to change the course of neurodegeneration, with the long-term goal of curing diseases in their earliest stages, years before symptoms appear.”

Cleveland Clinic is seeking study participants. Men and Women of all races/ethnicities age 50+ with no known neurological disorder, or neurologically healthy adults age 20+ who have a first degree relative (e.g., parent or sibling) diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, are eligible to enroll in the Brain Study. Volunteers undergo yearly assessments including a neurological examination, bloodwork, brain MRIs, sleep studies, and other memory/cognitive assessments.

For more information or to enroll, visit clevelandclinic.org/brainstudy.

BEDFORD, OH — Three candidates with deep community ties and decades of public service are running as a slate for the Bedford City Schools Board of Education. Anthony Akins, Sr., Chris Callender, and Montez Morton, Sr. bring a shared commitment to transparency, equity, and student-first leadership—anchored by their campaign tagline: “Vote for leadership that listens, supports, and leads with integrity.”

Anthony Akins, Sr., a proud graduate of the Bedford City School District and longtime Oakwood Village resident, is seeking his second term on the board. Akins is a former Oakwood Village councilperson and the parent of five children—three Bedford graduates and two currently enrolled in the district. His leadership is grounded in lived experience, public service, and a deep belief in equitable, student-centered decision-making.

Chris Callender is a seasoned K–12 school administrator and a longtime Oakwood Village resident. Callender also served as a Oakwood Village councilperson and has spent over 25 years coaching and mentoring youth through sports. He currently serves as an adjunct professor, preparing future educators with the same values he brings to this campaign: integrity, accountability, and care.

Montez Morton, Sr., is a lifelong Bedford resident, a longtime union member, and the parent of Bedford graduates. Morton’s leadership is rooted in advocacy, labor equity, and community empowerment. His decades of union involvement reflect a commitment to fairness, transparency, and standing up for working families—values he brings to the school board race with clarity and conviction.

Together, Akins, Callender, and Morton offer a balanced and experienced team ready to serve with integrity. Their platform centers on responsible governance, transparent communication, and a shared belief that students must always come first—and accountability must always follow.

“We’re here to listen. We’re here to lead. And we’re here to ensure that students remain at the center of every decision,” the slate shared in a joint statement.

The election will be held on Tuesday, November 4, with early voting underway.  If you want to see change, Bedford, Bedford Heights, Oakwood Village, and Walton Hills voters have the opportunity to choose leadership that reflects the values of the district—and the voices of the families it serves. Vote November 4th.

February 1, 1930 – June 21, 2025

Genevieve Mae Nick, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, at the age of 95.

Born on February 1, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, Genevieve was the daughter of Lawrence and Bessie Kennedy. She was raised in Bedford, where she graduated from Bedford High School. In 1955, she followed the love of her life, Denny Nick, to Germany during his military service — a testament to their unwavering bond. The two were married for 64 years until Denny’s passing. In 1957, they settled in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where they raised their family and created a home full of warmth, laughter, and a competitive game of cards. In 2015, Genevieve and Denny relocated to Virginia to be closer to their growing family.

Genevieve was known for her poise, grace, and timeless style — always dressed and ready for anything. But beneath the polished exterior was a woman who loved deeply and lived fully. She had a passion for fishing, a joy she shared with her family during countless sun-soaked days on the water. Her competitive spirit came out over a deck of cards, and many family memories were made around the table, filled with laughter, playful jabs, and stories that will live on for generations.

She is preceded in death by her husband Denny, her parents Lawrence and Bessie, and her brothers Charles and Arch Kennedy.

She is survived by her daughters, Diana Barfield and Laura Kaufman (Blair); her granddaughters, Julia Hubbard (Ryan) and Kathryn Vasil (David); and her great-grandchildren, Emily Ledger, Denny Ledger, Jake Hubbard, Ben Hubbard, Claire Vasil, and Logan Vasil.

Genevieve’s legacy is one of quiet strength, deep love, and family traditions that will continue through the lives she touched. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont in Genevieve’s memory.
