One of the simplest tech habits that often goes overlooked is restarting your devices regularly. While it might seem like an unnecessary step, giving your computer, tablet, or smartphone a fresh start once in a while can make a big difference in how well it performs.

Restarting helps clear temporary files and background tasks that may slow things down. It gives your device a chance to install system updates properly, close out unused apps, and refresh its memory. If your computer or phone has been running sluggishly, crashing unexpectedly, or struggling to connect to Wi-Fi, a restart can often resolve the issue without needing any further troubleshooting.

Setting a reminder to restart once a week—especially if you leave devices on all the time—can improve both speed and stability. For smartphones and tablets, you can usually power them down by holding the side button until a prompt appears. On computers, simply select “Restart” from the power menu.

Restarting can also help with security. Many updates and patches that protect your device from online threats don’t fully apply until the system restarts. So if you’ve recently installed updates, don’t delay that reboot.

It’s a simple step, but one that can save time, reduce frustration, and keep your tech working smoothly. Just like we occasionally need a break to reset and recharge, so do our devices.

The season of giving brings out the best in many people—but unfortunately, it can also bring out scammers looking to take advantage of your generosity. Around Thanksgiving, fake charity scams become increasingly common, often preying on people’s good intentions and the desire to help those in need during the holidays.

These scams typically come in the form of emails, phone calls, social media posts, or even text messages claiming to represent well-known charities—or worse, made-up organizations that sound legitimate. The scammer may use urgent language, emotional stories, or seasonal references like “help families have a Thanksgiving meal” to pressure you into donating quickly.

To protect yourself, take a moment to verify before giving. Reputable charities will never rush or guilt you into donating. Visit the official website of the organization by typing the URL directly, not by clicking links in unsolicited messages. Use trusted platforms like Charity Navigator or the IRS’s nonprofit lookup tool to confirm legitimacy.

Also, be wary of requests for payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency—these are common red flags. Stick to using secure, traceable methods like a credit card or PayPal on a verified site.

This Thanksgiving, giving to those in need is a beautiful gesture—but be sure your help reaches the right hands. A little caution can go a long way in ensuring your generosity has the impact you intend.

Keeping your devices secure doesn’t need to be complicated—it just takes a few smart habits. Whether you’re using a computer, tablet, or smartphone, these simple steps can help you avoid common security pitfalls and keep your personal information safe.

First, always keep your device software up to date. Updates often include important security patches that protect against new threats. If possible, turn on automatic updates so you don’t have to remember.

Next, be cautious with links and downloads. Only open attachments or click on links if you trust the sender. Even if something looks like it’s from a familiar company or friend, double-check the email address or phone number. Scammers often disguise themselves to trick you into downloading harmful software.

Using strong, unique passwords is another key defense. Consider a password manager to help keep track of them. If your device offers two-factor authentication, turn it on—it’s an extra layer of protection that’s well worth it.

Public Wi-Fi is convenient, but it’s not always safe. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts or making purchases on open networks unless you’re using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Finally, install trusted antivirus software. It can help detect and remove threats before they become a problem.

Taking a few minutes to adjust your settings and review your habits can go a long way in keeping your devices secure.

QR codes—those small, square patterns you scan with your phone to access websites—have become a convenient tool for everything from restaurant menus to concert tickets. But as QR codes become more common, scammers are exploiting them in sneaky ways.

The scam works like this: a scammer places a fake QR code sticker over a real one in a public place, like a parking meter, event poster, or delivery drop box. When someone scans the code, it redirects them to a phony website that may look official. These bogus sites often ask for personal or payment information, tricking people into handing over credit card numbers, login credentials, or even Social Security numbers.

Sometimes, scanning a malicious QR code can also trigger an automatic app download or a prompt to give permission for things like location tracking or camera access—opening the door to more privacy violations.

To stay safe, only scan QR codes from trusted sources. Double-check the website address before entering any personal info. If a QR code seems out of place—like on a printed sign taped to a gas pump—it’s worth being cautious. And never install apps or software directly from a QR code unless you’re sure it’s legitimate.

QR codes are handy, but like any tech, they’re best used with a healthy dose of caution. If something feels off, it’s better to type in the website manually or contact the organization directly.

Looking for extra income or a new opportunity online can seem convenient, but scammers have turned fake job postings into one of their most effective traps. Employment scams often appear on job boards, social media, or even in your email inbox, promising easy work with high pay and flexible hours.

The catch? These “employers” typically ask for personal details—like your Social Security number, bank account information, or copies of identification—early in the process. Others may ask you to purchase training materials or pay upfront for equipment. Once you’ve sent money or information, the scammers disappear, leaving you at risk of financial loss or identity theft.

Some scams are even more elaborate, offering remote work-from-home positions where they “accidentally” overpay you with a fake check, then ask you to refund the difference. By the time the bank flags the check as fraudulent, your money is already gone.

To stay safe, research any company before applying. Check their official website and confirm that the job is listed there. Be wary of vague job descriptions, poor grammar, or offers that sound too good to be true. A legitimate employer will never require payment upfront for training or equipment, and they’ll conduct interviews before requesting sensitive information.

If you suspect a job offer is fake, stop communication immediately and report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Staying cautious can help you focus on genuine opportunities while avoiding the growing risk of employment scams.

Typing on a smartphone or tablet can be frustrating, especially when the letters are small or your hands get tired. That’s where voice-to-text features come in. Built into most modern smartphones, tablets, and computers, voice-to-text lets you speak your message instead of typing it. It’s a simple way to send texts, write emails, or jot down notes—no keyboard needed.

To use voice-to-text, open any app where you’d normally type (like Messages, Notes, or Email). Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard, then speak clearly. Your words will appear on the screen like magic. When you’re done, tap the microphone again to stop. It’s that easy.

This feature is available on both Apple and Android devices. On iPhones and iPads, look for the microphone icon on the keyboard. On Android phones, you may need to enable “Google Voice Typing” in your keyboard settings first. Many computers also offer dictation features, often found in accessibility or keyboard settings.

Voice-to-text helps in more ways than just convenience. It can reduce strain on your hands, help avoid spelling mistakes, and make communicating faster. It’s also a helpful tool if you’re multitasking or dealing with temporary mobility issues.

Give it a try the next time you want to send a quick message. With a little practice, you may find you prefer talking to typing.

Scammers are getting more creative—and more convincing—when it comes to fake utility bill scams. These schemes often arrive by phone, email, or even text message, claiming to be from your electric, gas, or water provider. The message? You’re supposedly overdue on your payment and risk immediate disconnection unless you act now.

That “urgent” tone is the first red flag. Real utility companies typically send multiple written notices and offer time to respond—not threats of instant shutoff. Scammers often demand immediate payment via prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, or mobile apps like Zelle or CashApp. This method is difficult to trace, which makes it a favorite among fraudsters.

Be cautious of caller ID, too. It can be faked to look like it’s coming from your actual utility provider. Instead of reacting right away, take a moment. Hang up and contact your provider using the number on your official bill—not the one the caller gives you.

Also, be wary of any links sent via email or text. These might lead to lookalike websites designed to steal your payment information.

To stay safe, consider setting up online accounts with your utility companies so you can track billing activity directly. You can also sign up for alerts to be notified of any changes.

If you think you’ve been targeted or accidentally provided information, report the scam to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and your utility company right away.

With screens and notifications competing for attention, staying focused can be a challenge in today’s fast-paced digital world. Fortunately, technology also offers tools designed to help strengthen focus and keep the mind sharp.

One popular option is brain training apps, like Lumosity or Elevate, which offer short daily games designed to improve memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. These exercises are engaging and easy to use, making them a simple way to keep the mind active.

For those who find their attention drifting during tasks, focus timers such as Forest or Pomodoro apps can be helpful. These apps use timed sessions to encourage concentration and break work or activities into manageable chunks. Forest even rewards focus by “growing” a virtual tree as you stay on task.

Meditation and mindfulness apps, like Headspace or Calm, can also support mental clarity. A few minutes a day spent on breathing or guided meditations can reduce stress and improve the ability to stay present.

For organizing thoughts or to-dos, simple note-taking apps like Google Keep or Microsoft OneNote help track ideas, lists, and reminders without relying on paper or memory alone.

With consistent use, these tools can help manage distractions and support better mental fitness. Staying focused doesn’t require ignoring technology—it just means using it wisely. By choosing the right apps and creating a routine, anyone can take small steps toward better concentration and a clearer mind.

Cryptocurrency has become a buzzword in recent years, promising big returns and exciting new ways to invest. But with the rise in popularity comes an increase in scams designed to take advantage of curious or uninformed individuals. Understanding how these scams work is the first step in staying safe.

Many crypto scams begin with unsolicited messages—emails, texts, or social media messages—from someone claiming to have a great investment opportunity. They may pose as financial advisors or even impersonate celebrities or public figures. Some scammers create fake websites that look like legitimate crypto exchanges or wallets, tricking users into entering personal or financial information.

Another common scam involves promises of guaranteed returns. No investment is ever guaranteed, especially in the highly unpredictable world of cryptocurrency. Be especially cautious if you’re pressured to act quickly or asked to send money through a wire transfer, prepaid card, or cryptocurrency wallet—these transactions are nearly impossible to reverse once completed.

It’s also important to avoid clicking on links in unexpected emails or messages, even if they seem to come from someone you know. Scammers often hijack accounts to spread dangerous links that can steal your data or lead you to fake sites.

Before getting involved with any cryptocurrency investment, consult a trusted financial advisor and research the company or platform thoroughly. Staying cautious and informed can help you avoid costly mistakes and keep your personal and financial information safe.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, and fitness apps can be a great way to stay active and track your progress. Whether you’re walking through your neighborhood, biking a nearby trail, or gardening in the yard, fitness apps can help you set goals, monitor your activity, and stay motivated.

Many free and easy-to-use apps like Google Fit, Apple Health, and MapMyWalk can automatically track your steps, distance, and even heart rate if connected to a smartwatch or fitness tracker. These apps often allow you to set daily or weekly goals and celebrate milestones along the way.

Some apps also include GPS features to map your outdoor walks or bike rides. This can be fun for keeping a record of your favorite routes or discovering new ones nearby. With features like weather tracking and reminders to stretch or drink water, fitness apps can support a well-rounded approach to summer wellness.

Social media can play a helpful role, too. Many fitness apps allow you to connect with friends or family to share progress or cheer each other on. You can also choose to post your achievements on platforms like Facebook or Instagram—just make sure to review your privacy settings before sharing your location or health information.

By using fitness apps, you can make your summer outings more engaging, track your improvements over time, and stay connected with others who enjoy healthy, active lifestyles. It’s a simple way to bring technology and wellness together.
