As the heat of summer fully settles into Bedford, July is the perfect time to focus on outdoor home maintenance to keep your property in top shape. Here are some practical tips for summer-proofing your home outdoors in July:

  1. Check Irrigation Systems: Hot, dry days in July can put stress on your lawn and garden. Ensure your irrigation system is functioning properly by checking for leaks, clogged sprinkler heads, and even coverage. Adjust the timer settings to water early in the morning or late in the evening to prevent evaporation.
  2. Inspect Roof for Summer Damage: Summer storms and intense sunlight can take a toll on your roof. Check for any loose or damaged shingles that may have occurred from heavy rain or high winds. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent leaks and water damage.
  3. Maintain Decks and Patios: If you have a wooden deck or patio, ensure it’s clean and properly sealed to protect it from moisture, sun damage, and wear. Reapply sealant if necessary and inspect for loose boards or structural damage.
  4. Protect Outdoor Furniture: Outdoor furniture can fade, rust, or degrade under the summer sun. Clean and store cushions in a dry place when not in use. Consider using weather-resistant covers for furniture to keep it in good condition.
  5. Check Outdoor Lighting: As the days grow longer, check that all outdoor lighting is functional. Clean fixtures, replace any broken bulbs, and ensure they are positioned to illuminate walkways and outdoor areas for safety.

By completing these tasks in July, Bedford homeowners can ensure their outdoor spaces are ready for the rest of summer and remain in great shape for the seasons ahead.

May in Bedford is the perfect time to focus on sustainable home maintenance and eco-friendly improvements. As the weather warms, homeowners can take steps to reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining the comfort and beauty of their homes. Here are some sustainable home maintenance tips for Bedford residents this May:

  1. Use Reclaimed Wood for Home Improvement Projects: Reclaimed wood is an excellent material for creating unique, eco-friendly home upgrades. Consider using reclaimed wood for shelving, furniture, or even new flooring. This not only reduces the need for new lumber but also adds character and charm to your space.
  2. Install Energy-Efficient Windows: Replace old, drafty windows with energy-efficient models to improve insulation and reduce heating and cooling costs. Opt for windows made from sustainable materials like fiberglass or aluminum to further minimize your environmental impact.
  3. Utilize Recycled Metal for Outdoor Projects: Recycled metal can be used for a variety of outdoor projects such as fencing, garden trellises, and decorative accents. Using recycled metal not only saves resources but also adds a modern touch to your outdoor space.
  4. Opt for Low-VOC Paints and Stains: When touching up your home’s interior or exterior, choose low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and stains. These environmentally friendly options improve indoor air quality and are safer for both your health and the environment.
  5. Maintain Your Lawn Sustainably: Instead of using chemical fertilizers, switch to organic lawn care products. You can also reduce water waste by installing a rain barrel to collect rainwater for garden and lawn irrigation.

By incorporating these sustainable home maintenance tips, Bedford homeowners can reduce their environmental impact while maintaining a beautiful, functional, and eco-friendly living space.

As warmer weather returns, the City of Bedford would like to remind all residents and property owners about the importance of regular yard maintenance. A well-kept property not only enhances the overall appearance of our neighborhoods but also contributes to community safety.

According to Bedford Codified Ordinances 1341.18 and 1341.19, property owners are responsible for maintaining the front, back, and side yard areas of their property. This includes cutting the grass, removing weeds, and trimming trees and shrubs as needed. Regular upkeep ensures that properties remain visually appealing and helps preserve the charm of Bedford’s residential areas.

Of particular importance is maintaining trees and shrubs in a way that does not obstruct views for drivers or pedestrians. Overgrown greenery can block sightlines at intersections or encroach on sidewalks, posing safety risks for both motorists and those on foot. Keeping vegetation neatly trimmed helps ensure that sidewalks are accessible and that traffic visibility is clear from all directions.

The City appreciates the cooperation of all residents in doing their part to keep neighborhoods safe, clean, and attractive. Regular yard maintenance not only improves property values but also reflects a shared sense of pride in our community.

This reminder was originally published in the March 2025 City of Bedford Newsletter. For more information or to review local maintenance regulations, please contact the city or refer to the Bedford Codified Ordinances.
