SOLON, OH — As reported by Cleveland 19 News, a Bedford Heights mother is facing child endangerment charges after leaving her two young children alone in a running car while she shopped at Giant Eagle in Solon.

Solon police responded to the store on Aurora Road on February 4 after a concerned shopper alerted an employee. Officers arrived to find a 1-year-old and a 6-year-old alone in the unlocked car, with the older child visibly upset. The mother, 26-year-old Mycal Davis, was paged and returned to the vehicle about six minutes later.

When confronted, Davis explained that she had only run into the store quickly to grab dinner, assuming the children were fine. Officers reminded her of the dangers, noting that the unlocked car presented an easy opportunity for someone to steal the vehicle with the children inside.

Fortunately, the situation did not escalate, but similar cases have led to abductions. In 2024, nine children in Ohio were left in stolen vehicles, part of a nationwide total of 118 cases. Authorities urge parents never to leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even briefly, and to consider alternatives such as curbside pickup.

Davis is scheduled to appear in court on February 26.

After a brief taste of spring-like weather, winter made a quick return to Bedford, bringing icy roads and sidewalks. While it’s easy to be lulled into thinking the worst is behind us, February still brings unpredictable conditions, making it important to stay prepared and cautious.

City Snow Removal & Resident Responsibilities

When snowfall exceeds two inches, a parking ban is enforced on all city streets so plows can clear roads effectively. Residents must also keep sidewalks free of snow and ice in front of their properties. Homeowners are encouraged to shovel around fire hydrants and keep snow piles on their property rather than pushing them into the street.

Safe Walking & Driving Tips

  • On Foot: Wear boots with good traction, take small, careful steps, and use handrails when available. Even if sidewalks appear clear, black ice may still be present.
  • On the Road: Drive cautiously, leave extra distance between vehicles, and brake gently. Overpasses and bridges freeze quickly, so approach them with care.
  • Be Prepared: Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, water, and other essentials in case of delays.

Winter isn’t over yet! Stay alert and follow city guidelines to keep yourself and others safe. For more details on Bedford’s snow removal policies, visit bedfordoh.gov. Stay safe, Bedford!

BEDFORD, OH — As reported by 21 News, on Monday, February 3, 2025, Los Gallos’ Bedford location participated in the nationwide event “A Day Without Immigrants.” The movement encouraged immigrants to refrain from working, shopping, or sending their children to school as a way to emphasize their contributions and advocate for their rights.

Restaurant owner Israel Zambrano explained that after more than 20 years in the United States, he wanted to show support for the Latino community. As a U.S. citizen who built a business and raised a family in the country, he expressed gratitude for the support he has received but also felt it was important to stand in solidarity with fellow immigrants.

While Zambrano backed the idea of stricter immigration policies concerning criminal activity, he hoped that hardworking Latinos seeking a better life would still have opportunities to succeed in the country. He closed his statement by thanking the community for its support and reaffirming his appreciation for the country that gave him the chance to build a future.

As reported by 21 News, Ohio Edison customers may notice a new fee when paying their monthly electric bills. While credit card users are accustomed to surcharges, a recent policy change, effective in January, now applies a 50-cent fee to one-time payments made from checking or savings accounts. This change follows Ohio Edison’s switch to a new third-party payment processor, ACI Speedpay, part of Western Union.

Previously, customers who paid with bank routing numbers but weren’t on an autopay plan avoided service fees. However, under the new system, the surcharge applies to all one-time payments, regardless of the payment method, unless customers are enrolled in specific automatic payment programs. Residential customers using AutoPay (either via credit card or bank account) and commercial customers on AutoPay bank plans will continue to be exempt from fees.

A FirstEnergy spokesperson explained that outsourcing payment processing helps the company maintain compliance and expand payment options. Ohio Edison now offers additional methods for bill payments, including PayPal and Venmo.

The new fee has been met with widespread frustration from Bedford customers, with many expressing disappointment and anger over the added charge. Some feel the change unfairly penalizes those who make multiple payments throughout the month, while others see it as another unnecessary cost burdening consumers.

Ohio Edison serves over one million customers across northeast and north-central Ohio. Customers with concerns about the new fee or payment options can contact Ohio Edison’s customer service at 1-800-633-4766 or reach out via email.
