BEDFORD, OH — As reported by WKYC Studios, as the beloved Bedford Strawberry Festival returns this weekend, the Bedford Police Department is implementing a new policy aimed at maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all attendees.

In a recent post on the department’s official Facebook page, police announced that minors will not be permitted at the festival unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The policy is being introduced as a preventive measure, following disruptions caused by unaccompanied minors at other festivals in the region. Officers made it clear that the rule will be strictly enforced with no exceptions.

The department emphasized its commitment to protecting the family-friendly nature of the event, which has been a cherished tradition in Bedford for many years. With crowds expected to gather for food, music, and festivities, officials hope the policy will deter any potential issues and allow the community to fully enjoy the weekend.

Festivalgoers are encouraged to plan accordingly and ensure that all minors are accompanied by an adult. The police department’s public message underscored the importance of preserving the positive spirit of the festival and not allowing a few individuals to disrupt what many in the community look forward to each year.

With the new guidelines in place, organizers and law enforcement are working together to ensure this year’s Strawberry Festival remains a safe and festive celebration for everyone in Bedford.

Classic Ceviche https://bedfordohio.org/lifestyle/cooking/classic-ceviche/ Fri, 13 Jun 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://bedfordohio.org/?p=14588 Ingredients: Instructions: Why This Recipe Works: In this Ceviche recipe, the lime juice is the key ingredient that denatures the fish proteins, effectively “cooking” the fish without heat. Ingredients:

  • 1 lb fresh white fish fillets (such as snapper, tilapia, or halibut), cut into small cubes
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (about 8-10 limes)
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional, for a balance of citrus flavors)
  • 1 small red onion, finely diced
  • 1 small cucumber, peeled, seeded, and diced
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 1-2 fresh jalapeño peppers, finely chopped (adjust to heat preference)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 avocado, diced (optional, for garnish)
  • Tortilla chips or tostadas (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fish:
    • Begin by cutting the fish fillets into small, bite-sized cubes. Make sure the fish is as fresh as possible for safety and best flavor. The freshness of the fish is key in a dish like ceviche since the “cooking” process relies on the acid in the citrus juice.
  2. Marinate the Fish:
    • Place the cubed fish in a non-reactive bowl (such as glass or ceramic). Pour the lime juice over the fish, ensuring it’s fully submerged. The acid from the lime juice will begin the denaturation process, turning the fish from translucent to opaque and firm. Let the fish marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the desired level of “doneness.” The longer it marinates, the firmer the fish will become.
  3. Prepare the Vegetables:
    • While the fish is marinating, finely dice the red onion, cucumber, tomato, and jalapeño. Chop the cilantro as well. Set these ingredients aside.
  4. Combine the Ingredients:
    • Once the fish has marinated, remove it from the refrigerator and gently toss it with the prepared vegetables and cilantro. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Serve:
    • Spoon the ceviche onto a plate or in small serving bowls. If desired, garnish with fresh diced avocado for extra creaminess. Serve with tortilla chips or tostadas on the side for a delightful crunch.

Why This Recipe Works:

In this Ceviche recipe, the lime juice is the key ingredient that denatures the fish proteins, effectively “cooking” the fish without heat. The acid breaks down the proteins, giving the fish a firm, opaque texture similar to cooked fish. The bright, zesty citrus flavor combined with the freshness of the vegetables and the heat from jalapeño creates a light, refreshing dish perfect for a summer meal. Ceviche is an excellent example of how denaturation can be used to transform raw ingredients into something flavorful and safe to eat.

Planning a trip can be exciting, but it’s important to stay alert to potential scams that target travelers. From fake vacation deals to dishonest tour operators, scammers often take advantage of people making travel arrangements—especially during busy seasons. With a few smart habits, you can protect yourself and enjoy a worry-free getaway.

Start by booking through reputable travel websites or agents. If a deal seems too good to be true—such as a luxury vacation at an unbelievably low price—it probably is. Research the company, read customer reviews, and confirm their contact details before making any payments.

Be cautious with unsolicited emails or phone calls offering vacation packages, cruises, or airfare. Scammers often pressure people into making quick decisions or paying upfront fees. Legitimate travel services will give you time to review details and ask questions.

Always use secure payment methods, such as credit cards, which offer more protection against fraud. Avoid wiring money or using prepaid gift cards to pay for travel—these are common tactics used in scams.

When renting a vacation home, verify the listing through trusted platforms like Airbnb or Vrbo. Look for properties with positive reviews and avoid listings that ask you to communicate or pay outside the platform.

Lastly, keep copies of all travel documents and confirmations, and be wary of last-minute changes or unexpected fees. By staying informed and cautious, you can avoid common travel scams and focus on what really matters—enjoying your trip.

June is here, y’all! The sun is shining, flowers are blooming, and summer is in full swing. It’s also a time to celebrate the beauty of community and the rich diversity all around us. What better way to enjoy the season than by making crafts that bring a little sunshine and a whole lot of love into our homes? These easy DIY projects use everyday items and are perfect for honoring summer vibes and celebrating the different cultures, colors, and stories that make the world so special.

1. Rainbow Sun Catchers

Let that sunshine in—with color! To make your own rainbow sun catcher, grab a clear plastic lid (like from a yogurt container), some tissue paper in different shades, and glue. Cut the tissue paper into small pieces and glue them onto the lid in a rainbow pattern or your own colorful design. Once it’s dry, punch a hole at the top, add some string, and hang it in a sunny window. It’ll shine with color just like the beautiful people in your life!

2. “World of Hands” Paper Wreath

This craft is a sweet way to celebrate diversity. Trace your hand on different colors of construction paper and cut out several hand shapes. You can even ask friends and family to trace theirs too! Glue the hands in a circle to form a wreath. In the center, write something like “We All Belong” or “Hands Together, Hearts United.” Hang it up as a reminder of how beautiful our differences are.

3. Cultural Windsocks

Windsocks are so fun for summer—and you can use them to learn about different cultures, too! Use an empty paper towel roll or a tin can with the bottom removed. Decorate the outside with symbols, colors, or patterns inspired by a culture you admire. Attach long strips of fabric, ribbon, or tissue paper to the bottom. Hang them on your porch or in the backyard and let the breeze carry your creativity.

4. Nature Friendship Bracelets

Head outside and collect small flowers, leaves, or grass. Use tape or contact paper to make a sticky strip (sticky side out), wrap it around your wrist, and gently press the natural items onto it. These little bracelets are a beautiful way to celebrate summer and the unique gifts nature offers to everyone—no matter where you’re from.

5. Painted Rock Messages

Find smooth stones and paint them with positive words like “peace,” “love,” “unity,” or “kind.” You can also paint flags, symbols, or designs that represent your heritage or someone else’s culture. Once dry, leave your rocks around the neighborhood, park, or school. You never know who might find your message and smile.

June is the perfect month to craft with meaning—mixing summer sunshine with heartfelt messages of love and inclusion. Whether you’re making rainbow sun catchers or windsocks inspired by faraway places, these simple projects help us celebrate who we are and who we share this beautiful world with. So grab your glue and paint, and let’s craft a summer full of kindness and color!

How a band kid became a leader, a creator, and a believer in legacy

For Jerrell White, a senior in Bedford’s Class of 2025, the band room has always been a second home. From fifth grade through high school, he found his rhythm—both musically and personally—thanks to the guidance of Mr. Nichols and Ms. Shauf.

Under their mentorship, Jerrell became more than a percussionist. He became a leader, creating an original piece titled “Shockwave,” serving as section leader and president, and learning that being part of the band means lifting others up while pushing yourself further.

Now headed to the University of Akron to study Jazz Studies, Jerrell reflects on what Bedford gave him: structure, belonging, and belief. His message to Rae Jones, the new head director, is simple—carry the torch with heart. And to Mr. Nichols and Ms. Shauf: thank you for changing my life.

Tia Williams’ Seven Days in June is a captivating romance that delves into themes of second chances, personal healing, and the complexities of past relationships. The narrative follows Eva Mercy, a successful author of an erotic supernatural series, and Shane Hall, a reclusive literary writer. Their unexpected reunion at a Brooklyn book event reignites a connection that began during a transformative seven-day romance in their youth.

Williams skillfully intertwines humor and depth, creating a story that is both entertaining and emotionally resonant. The chemistry between Eva and Shane is palpable, drawing readers into their tumultuous yet heartfelt journey. The novel doesn’t shy away from addressing serious issues such as chronic migraines, addiction, and the scars left by past traumas, providing a nuanced portrayal of its characters’ struggles and growth.

One of the standout aspects of the book is its exploration of Black identity and the literary world. Eva’s experiences highlight the challenges of being a Black woman in a field that often marginalizes such voices. This layer adds depth to the narrative, prompting readers to reflect on broader societal issues.

While the romance is central, the story’s richness lies in its characters’ development and the authentic depiction of their personal battles. Seven Days in June is more than just a love story; it’s a testament to resilience, the impact of our past, and the possibility of healing and reconnection. Williams’ engaging prose and complex characters make this novel a memorable and thought-provoking read.

BEDFORD, OH — As reported by Cleveland 19 News, a Bedford Heights woman, Mycal Davis, has been placed in Bedford Municipal Court’s diversion program following child endangering charges related to an incident in February. If Davis completes the program successfully, the charges against her will be dismissed.

The charges stem from an incident on February 4, when Davis left her one-year-old and six-year-old children alone in a running, unlocked vehicle outside the Giant Eagle on Aurora Road in Solon. A passerby noticed the children and notified a store employee, who then contacted police.

When officers arrived, they found the two children unharmed inside the vehicle. Davis was paged over the store’s intercom and exited the building approximately six minutes later. She reportedly told police the children had been asleep when she arrived and that she went in briefly to buy dinner for them.

Fortunately, no harm came to the children during the incident. However, it highlighted growing concerns about child safety in vehicles. According to Kids and Car Safety, there have been 118 cases in the United States in 2024 where children were left unattended in vehicles that were subsequently stolen. In Ohio alone, nine such incidents have occurred this year.

The diversion program provides an opportunity for first-time or low-risk offenders to avoid a criminal record by completing court-mandated requirements. Davis’s participation in the program could ultimately result in the charges being dropped, assuming all conditions are met.
