December in Bedford brings colder temperatures and the holiday season, making it the perfect time for homeowners to prepare their homes for winter. Below are some essential home maintenance tips to tackle this month:

  1. Inspect and Clean the Chimney: If you use your fireplace during the winter, make sure to schedule a chimney cleaning and inspection. This ensures that it’s free from dangerous creosote buildup and allows for proper ventilation.
  2. Check Your Heating System: With the cold settling in, it’s critical to ensure your heating system is working efficiently. Change air filters, clean vents, and schedule a professional inspection if needed to avoid breakdowns.
  3. Seal Gaps and Cracks: Inspect your home’s windows, doors, and foundation for any drafts or cracks. Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal any gaps and keep warm air inside, reducing heating costs.
  4. Prepare for Snow and Ice: Ensure that your snow removal equipment is in working order. Check your snow blower or get your shovel ready, and stock up on ice melt for walkways and driveways.
  5. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: As heating systems are running more, it’s important to check that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning correctly. Replace the batteries and test the alarms to ensure safety.
  6. Inspect and Clean Gutters: Clear gutters and downspouts of debris to prevent ice dams and water damage that can occur from freezing rain or heavy snow.

By addressing these home maintenance tasks in December, Bedford residents can enjoy a safe, warm, and comfortable winter season in their homes.

The holiday season brings with it an array of beloved films and shows that help capture the magic and warmth of Christmas. Whether you’re in the mood for heartwarming tales, slapstick comedy, or timeless classics, there’s something for everyone. Below are five Christmas classics that have stood the test of time, offering both nostalgia and the perfect dose of holiday spirit.

1. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

Description: Directed by Frank Capra, this timeless film tells the story of George Bailey (James Stewart), a man on the brink of suicide on Christmas Eve. With the help of an angel named Clarence, George gets a chance to see how different his community would be if he had never been born.
Review: It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the most heartwarming and influential Christmas films of all time. It’s filled with emotional depth, touching performances, and a powerful message about the importance of community and self-worth. While its black-and-white presentation may feel dated for younger viewers, the film’s timeless themes continue to resonate. This classic is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, we don’t realize the impact we have on others. Rating: 5/5

2. A Christmas Carol (1951)

Description: This adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novella stars Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly man who is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Through their visits, he learns the value of kindness and generosity.
Review: The 1951 version is one of the best adaptations of A Christmas Carol, delivering both the spooky and heartwarming elements of Dickens’ story. Alastair Sim’s portrayal of Scrooge is iconic, showcasing the character’s dramatic transformation from bitter miser to beloved philanthropist. It is a beautifully crafted film that captures both the grim and redemptive sides of the story. Rating: 4.5/5

3. Home Alone (1990)

Description: This slapstick comedy follows 8-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) as he’s accidentally left home alone during Christmas. He must defend his house from two bumbling burglars, Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), using a variety of ingenious traps.
Review: Home Alone is a perfect blend of comedy, heart, and holiday spirit. It’s hard not to smile at Kevin’s resourcefulness and wit, and the film’s simple message about family and love never gets old. While the movie’s slapstick humor is at times over-the-top, it remains a classic that generations continue to enjoy. Its charm is in its childlike wonder and heartwarming conclusion. Rating: 4/5

4. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (1966)

Description: This animated short, based on Dr. Seuss’ book, follows the Grinch (voiced by Boris Karloff) as he tries to ruin Christmas for the Whos in Whoville, only to learn that Christmas is about more than just presents and decorations.
Review: The original animated version of The Grinch remains one of the most enduring Christmas specials. With its catchy songs and quirky animation style, it has a timeless charm that appeals to both children and adults. The Grinch’s transformation from a bitter, isolated figure to someone who embraces love and kindness is both simple and profound. Rating: 5/5

EDITORIAL OPINION – My brother was released from jail in 2021 during COVID because the government was worried he might become infected and die from COVID in jail. No matter what the road to good intentions was, my brother is now dead and it was not from COVID.

He was released from jail with significant mental health and drug issues with no support system just so that he might not get COVID. Instead the significant mental health and drug issues that were being treated at his prison were tossed aside and ignored so he could “survive” a pandemic that probably was never going to kill him.

So I really, really cannot express the disgust I feel for Jimmy Dimora receiving a commutation from President Biden because he was part of the same release program that my brother also “benefited” from.

Don’t get me wrong. My brother robbed 2 banks in Virginia. With a fake gun and a fedora, no less. You can look it up on the internet.

My brother committed very serious crimes. He also had very serious mental health and drug issues. It is not an excuse. My family was relieved when he went into the prison system. It was the closest we ever got to having him get the help he clearly needed. And then the Federal government released him from prison, 7 years into a 20 year sentence, with the misplaced goal to save his life from COVID. The Federal government ended up ending his life. His mental health and drug issues finally took him not long after his release.

So when I heard that Jimmy Dimora, the man who literally plundered and pillaged Southeast Cuyahoga County with his corruption, had his sentence commuted by President Biden because he had been released on the same program… I don’t have the proper, socially acceptable words to describe how I feel. Just know they involve many swear words and so much anger.

Yes, my brother did horrible, horrible things. He terrified around 40 strangers at the banks involved. Absolutely horrifying that he did that to those people.

Jimmy Dimora’s culture of government corruption hurt TENS OF THOUSANDS of people. My community and my surrounding communities are still reeling from the effects of Jimmy Dimora’s corrupt dealings. Bedford, Bedford Heights, Oakwood Village, Maple Heights, Garfield Heights and well beyond are experiencing a desperate change in mobility that can be tied directly to Jimmy Dimora’s influence on corruption in the Southeast region.

So my question is, why was Jimmy Dimoria’s sentence commuted while my brother died? If my brother was alive today, would President Biden have commuted his sentence too? I know 1,500 commutations seems like a lot. But the US prison system currently has nearly 2 million people in it. 1,500 commutations is a tiny drop in the bucket in comparison. To make the math easier, that is about 30 people per state. Which means Dear Mister Dimora was one of only approximately 30 people in Ohio to be pardoned by Biden.

I highly doubt that if my brother was alive today, he would have benefited like Jimmy Dimora has benefited from President Biden blanket commutation.

But I guess terrorizing 40 strangers (my brother) is a greater crime than decimating the the community and upward mobility of tens of thousands of his own neighbors and constituents (Jimmy Dimora).

<sarcasm font> Thank you, President Biden, for once again showing us who you care about. Party loyalty is rewarded for the sake of moving the party’s message forward, even if the person receiving it is corrupt and hurt their entire community.  </sarcasm font>

My mentally ill brother obviously was not a real concern to the Biden Administration either during COVID or now. Forgiving party loyalists who hurt all of us with unadulterated corruption seems to be ok though. And that should be a concern for all of us.
