When it comes to frosting a cake, cupcake, or cookie, one of the most essential (and most overlooked) techniques is also the simplest: make sure your baked goods are completely cool before adding frosting. While it sounds obvious, impatient frosting is the number one reason buttercream melts, cream cheese frosting slides off, and beautiful decorations collapse.

Why does this matter so much? Frosting — especially buttercream — is extremely temperature sensitive. Even warmth that feels mild to your hand can cause the butter in frosting to soften or melt. Applying it too early results in a messy, unstable coating, and no amount of extra frosting will fix it.

To ensure success, follow these cooling basics:

  • Let the cake rest in its pan for 10–15 minutes, then turn it onto a rack. This prevents breakage.
  • Use a wire cooling rack, which allows air to circulate around the entire cake.
  • Wait at least 1–2 hours, depending on cake size, until no warmth remains.
  • For extra insurance, refrigerate the cake for 20–30 minutes before frosting. A slightly chilled cake creates clean, smooth results.

Cooling fully also makes your frosting easier to spread, reduces crumbs, and helps designs hold their shape. Whether you’re piping borders or spreading a simple swirl, starting with a cool cake is the secret to a polished, professional finish — no advanced decorating skills required.

One of the simplest tech habits that often goes overlooked is restarting your devices regularly. While it might seem like an unnecessary step, giving your computer, tablet, or smartphone a fresh start once in a while can make a big difference in how well it performs.

Restarting helps clear temporary files and background tasks that may slow things down. It gives your device a chance to install system updates properly, close out unused apps, and refresh its memory. If your computer or phone has been running sluggishly, crashing unexpectedly, or struggling to connect to Wi-Fi, a restart can often resolve the issue without needing any further troubleshooting.

Setting a reminder to restart once a week—especially if you leave devices on all the time—can improve both speed and stability. For smartphones and tablets, you can usually power them down by holding the side button until a prompt appears. On computers, simply select “Restart” from the power menu.

Restarting can also help with security. Many updates and patches that protect your device from online threats don’t fully apply until the system restarts. So if you’ve recently installed updates, don’t delay that reboot.

It’s a simple step, but one that can save time, reduce frustration, and keep your tech working smoothly. Just like we occasionally need a break to reset and recharge, so do our devices.

December Home Maintenance Tips for Bedford: Often Overlooked Tasks During the Holidays https://bedfordohio.org/lifestyle/home-tips/december-home-maintenance-tips-for-bedford-often-overlooked-tasks-during-the-holidays/ Wed, 03 Dec 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://bedfordohio.org/?p=17168 December in Bedford brings cold weather, holiday gatherings, and a long to-do list — but it’s also the time when many important home maintenance tasks get overlooked. December in Bedford brings cold weather, holiday gatherings, and a long to-do list — but it’s also the time when many important home maintenance tasks get overlooked. Staying ahead of these small but essential chores can prevent big problems during the busiest month of the year. Here are key December home maintenance tips Bedford homeowners shouldn’t ignore:

  1. Check Indoor Air Quality:
With homes sealed tight against the cold, indoor air can become dry and stale. Clean furnace filters, dust vents, and consider using a humidifier to maintain comfortable humidity levels and protect wood furniture from drying out.
  2. Clear Dryer Vents:
Laundry loads often increase with guests and winter clothing. Cleaning the dryer vent reduces fire risk and helps your dryer work more efficiently during the busy holiday season.
  3. Test Exterior Lighting:
As days grow shorter, make sure exterior lights are working properly. Replacing bulbs and checking for damaged wiring increases safety for guests and helps prevent slips on icy walkways.
  4. Inspect Holiday Decorations and Extension Cords:
Before plugging in lights or décor, inspect cords for fraying or damage. Overloading outlets is common in December — use surge protectors and avoid connecting too many strands end-to-end.
  5. Check Under Sinks for Slow Leaks:
Cold temperatures and holiday cooking can stress plumbing. Take a quick look under kitchen and bathroom sinks to catch slow drips early, before they turn into costly water damage.
  6. Clear Snow From Furnace and Dryer Exhaust Vents:
After snowfall, ensure that outdoor vents remain unobstructed. Blocked vents can cause carbon monoxide buildup or appliance failure.

By keeping up with these often-forgotten tasks, Bedford homeowners can enjoy a safe, comfortable, and stress-free holiday season — and avoid surprises when winter hits its coldest stretch.

It’s hard to believe that my 8 years of service as councilman in ward #3 is coming to an end. Some of my accomplishments were getting Bedford high school baseball complex named after long time high school baseball coach Bob Leoffler. I also got the old Interstate playground renamed to Bill Cosgrove park.

Some of my other projects were to get former councilwoman Paula Mizak’s name on a tot lot in her ward. She passed away battling cancer. She was a councilwoman for over 25 years. As a council, we also had the pool house rebuilt at the city pool.

Serving ward #3 was an experience that I enjoyed tremendously. If someone had a problem or issue with something I was always there to help. I made sure of that!

Down the road Bedford is going to go through some big changes. The state of Ohio kids facility will be up and running soon, the old Hospital site is going to be a new look soon, these are going to keep Bedford moving forward, especially with new tax dollars!

Our Police and fire departments are in great hands. Service and recreation are also in good hands. City Manager Mike Mallis is doing a great job. He’s been a great person to work with. He has done so much for me as I grew into the position of a councilman.

It’s going to be hard the next few weeks leaving my colleagues on council. I have been in this city for over 60 years, in the same ward . I am a kid from the neighborhood, I have seen a lot of people come and go. Now it’s my time to go!

Goodbye to the citizens of Bedford, I hope I served you well.

As the holidays approach in Bedford, festive foods and treats fill our homes—but many of them can be dangerous for pets. December is a time for celebration, but it’s also a month when pet health issues can spike due to diet changes and accidental snacking. Here are some important pet care tips to help keep your furry companions healthy and safe this holiday season.

1. Be Mindful of Holiday Treats
Many traditional holiday foods, including chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and foods sweetened with xylitol, are toxic to pets. Even rich or fatty foods like turkey skin or gravy can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis. Keep all human treats and leftovers out of reach, and remind guests not to feed table scraps to your pets. If you’d like to include your pet in the holiday fun, opt for pet-safe treats—many pet stores offer festive biscuits or chew toys made specifically for pets.

2. Watch Portion Sizes
Overeating is as unhealthy for pets as it is for humans. Keep your pet’s regular feeding routine and avoid giving them too many treats. Sudden diet changes can upset digestion and lead to long-term health issues.

3. Provide Healthy Alternatives
For dogs, consider small portions of safe fruits or vegetables, like apple slices (without seeds) or cooked carrots. Cats may enjoy a bit of plain cooked chicken or salmon as a special holiday treat.

4. Maintain Routine
Amid holiday chaos, try to keep feeding, walking, and play schedules consistent. This helps pets feel secure and reduces stress during busy family gatherings.

By following these December pet care tips, you can help ensure that your furry friends in Bedford stay healthy, happy, and safe all holiday season long.

♎ Libra
Mercury’s retrograde may have you second-guessing finances or self-worth. Venus shifts into Scorpio, enhancing your power to manifest wealth—just not impulsively. Mars energizes your social zone: take the mic, but read the room. Clarity returns by the weekend.

♏ Scorpio
Your charm skyrockets as Venus sashays into your sign—use it wisely! Mercury retrograde still clouds self-expression, so think before you text. The Sun boosts financial matters—hold decisions until next week. Mars fuels ambition—don’t let pride block your brilliance.

♐ Sagittarius
Happy solar season! You’re radiant, but Mercury retrograde in your sign is tripping up plans. Venus entering Scorpio enhances your intuition—listen to your gut. Mars keeps your higher mind buzzing. Reflect now, relaunch later.

♑ Capricorn
Mercury retrograde has you reviewing old dreams or missteps. Venus sweetens friendships—surprising connections could spark. Mars activates deep emotions—watch for power struggles. The Sagittarius Sun encourages rest before your season begins. Prepare, don’t push.

♒ Aquarius
Social dynamics sparkle, but Mercury retrograde could revive old group drama. Venus in Scorpio makes you magnetic in your career—diplomacy is your secret weapon. Mars stirs fire in partnerships—passion or friction? You decide. Strategy wins the week.
