Edible flowers are a beautiful and flavorful way to enhance your culinary creations. Not only do they add vibrant color and texture, but many edible flowers also offer unique flavors that can elevate both sweet and savory dishes. Incorporating flowers into your meals is an art that brings nature’s beauty straight to the table.

How to Use Edible Flowers in Cooking:

  1. Choose Safe Flowers:
Before using flowers in cooking, ensure they are safe to eat. Common edible flowers include pansies, nasturtiums, violets, dandelions, chive blossoms and marigolds. Always use flowers grown specifically for consumption, as many garden flowers may be treated with pesticides or chemicals not meant for consumption.
  2. Flavor Profiles:
Different flowers have distinct flavors. For example, nasturtiums have a peppery taste, similar to arugula, while violets are sweet and delicate. Lavender has a floral, slightly minty flavor, and chrysanthemums can offer a mild, slightly bitter taste.
  3. Incorporating into Dishes:
Edible flowers can be used in various ways, such as garnishing salads, desserts, or cocktails. They can also be added to baked goods like cakes, scones, or cookies. For savory dishes, flowers like nasturtiums or chive blossoms can add color and a pop of flavor.

Why Edible Flowers Are Important:

Using edible flowers in cooking adds both flavor and visual appeal to dishes. Not only do they brighten up the plate, but they also introduce new and subtle flavor profiles that can surprise and delight your guests. Edible flowers are an easy way to incorporate the beauty of nature into your meals, making them both visually and gastronomically appealing.

Incorporating edible flowers into your dishes is a simple yet sophisticated way to enhance your culinary repertoire, especially in early spring when flowers like pansies and violets are at their peak.

As a mom in Bedford, I look forward to Easter and spring break as an opportunity to get creative with my kids. With the weather warming up and more time at home, it’s the perfect chance to foster their imagination and encourage hands-on activities. Here are some simple ways to spark creativity during this special time.

  1. Spring-Themed Crafts: Easter provides the perfect backdrop for crafting. Whether it’s decorating Easter eggs, making flower crowns, or creating colorful spring-themed paintings, there are endless possibilities. I love setting up a crafting station with markers, stickers, and other supplies. Letting the kids choose their own designs or colors makes the activity even more personal and imaginative.
  2. Outdoor Nature Art: With the weather finally warming up, we love taking art projects outdoors. Using materials like twigs, leaves, and flowers, we create natural art pieces, or sometimes even create simple mandalas on the ground. Nature provides endless inspiration and gives kids the chance to appreciate the outdoors while being creative.
  3. Cooking Together: Another way to spark creativity is by getting the kids involved in the kitchen. We make homemade bunny-shaped cookies or colorful spring-themed cupcakes. They love decorating them with frosting and sprinkles, and it’s a great way to explore their artistic side while making a tasty treat.
  4. Storytelling and Imaginative Play: Lastly, we incorporate imaginative play by creating stories. Whether we act them out or simply write them down, it allows the kids to create their own worlds and characters.

These simple activities not only make Easter and spring break fun but also nurture the creative skills that will benefit my kids year-round.

Hello, my darlings! As April arrives in Bedford, bringing with it the promise of blooming flowers and warmer days, it’s the perfect time to refresh your home with some spring-inspired decor. Let’s bring the beauty of the season indoors and out, and make your home feel as fresh and vibrant as the world outside.

  1. Lighten Up with Soft Colors: Say goodbye to the darker hues of winter and welcome soft pastels and bright spring colors. Think gentle shades of lavender, mint green, soft yellow, and pale pink. Use these colors for throw pillows, curtains, or even a fresh coat of paint on an accent wall to bring warmth and light into your home.
  2. Bring Nature Inside: One of the simplest ways to welcome spring is by incorporating plants into your decor. Place potted flowers like tulips, daffodils, or hyacinths around the house. You can also add greenery with ferns, ivy, or succulents to brighten your space and improve the air quality.
  3. Celebrate with Fresh Flowers: Nothing says spring like a vase full of fresh flowers. Whether you pick up a bouquet from a local market or gather flowers from your garden, fresh blooms can instantly lift your spirits and add a burst of color to any room.
  4. Add Natural Textures: Bring the beauty of nature inside by adding woven baskets, wooden furniture, or jute rugs. These natural elements help create a warm, grounded atmosphere that complements the beauty of spring.
  5. Use Light Fabrics: Swap out heavy fabrics for lighter, airier materials like linen, cotton, or sheer curtains. These fabrics allow sunlight to fill your home and create a relaxed, breezy atmosphere.
  6. Spruce Up Your Entryway Outdoors: Don’t forget the first impression your home makes—your entryway! Add a vibrant welcome mat, hang a seasonal wreath on your front door, or place some colorful potted plants by the entrance. A few simple touches like these can make your entry feel fresh and inviting for both guests and family. Consider planting some spring flowers like pansies or daffodils around your front porch or steps to create a warm, welcoming space that mirrors the beauty of the season.

With these spring-inspired decor tips, your Bedford home will feel refreshed, cozy, and ready to embrace the beauty of the season—both inside and out. Happy decorating, my darlings, and may your home be filled with the joys of spring!

April in Bedford marks the arrival of spring, a season of change and renewal. This time of year offers an excellent opportunity for Bedford residents to reflect on personal growth and embrace change as part of their mental and emotional well-being.

Change can often feel intimidating or unsettling, but when approached with a positive mindset, it can lead to personal growth, greater resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose. Embracing change involves accepting that life’s seasons ebb and flow, and that growth often happens when we step outside our comfort zones.

One of the first steps in embracing change is practicing self-reflection. Take time this April to reflect on the changes in your life over the past year. What have you learned? What new opportunities have emerged? Self-reflection helps you gain perspective and identify areas where you may be ready to grow or make changes.

Another powerful practice is letting go. Often, we hold on to old patterns, beliefs, or routines that no longer serve us. Spring is the perfect time to let go of what no longer aligns with your values or goals. This could mean releasing negative thought patterns, letting go of clutter, or simply adopting a more flexible approach to your daily life.

Embracing change and renewal can be both freeing and transformative. As Bedford residents experience the new growth of spring, allow this season to inspire positive shifts in your emotional well-being, fostering a sense of renewal and openness to the future.

As warmer weather returns, the City of Bedford would like to remind all residents and property owners about the importance of regular yard maintenance. A well-kept property not only enhances the overall appearance of our neighborhoods but also contributes to community safety.

According to Bedford Codified Ordinances 1341.18 and 1341.19, property owners are responsible for maintaining the front, back, and side yard areas of their property. This includes cutting the grass, removing weeds, and trimming trees and shrubs as needed. Regular upkeep ensures that properties remain visually appealing and helps preserve the charm of Bedford’s residential areas.

Of particular importance is maintaining trees and shrubs in a way that does not obstruct views for drivers or pedestrians. Overgrown greenery can block sightlines at intersections or encroach on sidewalks, posing safety risks for both motorists and those on foot. Keeping vegetation neatly trimmed helps ensure that sidewalks are accessible and that traffic visibility is clear from all directions.

The City appreciates the cooperation of all residents in doing their part to keep neighborhoods safe, clean, and attractive. Regular yard maintenance not only improves property values but also reflects a shared sense of pride in our community.

This reminder was originally published in the March 2025 City of Bedford Newsletter. For more information or to review local maintenance regulations, please contact the city or refer to the Bedford Codified Ordinances.

April in Bedford brings longer days and milder weather, signaling a prime time for gardeners to actively engage in cultivating their outdoor spaces. This month is critical for setting up a garden that will flourish through spring and summer. Here’s what you should focus on to maximize your gardening efforts:

  1. Plant Cool-Weather Crops: Early April is ideal for sowing seeds directly into the soil for vegetables like peas, radishes, carrots, and leafy greens. These crops can handle the still-cool nights.
  2. Prepare Soil and Beds: Continue to prepare your garden beds. Remove any remaining winter debris, turn the soil, and enrich it with compost or well-rotted manure to boost nutrient content.
  3. Prune and Clean: Prune spring-flowering shrubs and trees after they bloom to maintain their shape and health. Also, clean up around plants to reduce the risk of disease and pests.
  4. Start Transplants: Begin to harden off seedlings started indoors so they can adjust to outdoor conditions. Gradually increase their exposure to sunlight and outdoor temperatures before planting them in the garden.
  5. Lawn Care: Rake to remove thatch and aerate your lawn to improve water penetration. April is also a good time to overseed any bare patches.
  6. Mulching: Apply mulch around trees, shrubs, and beds to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, and regulate soil temperature.
  7. Water Wisely: As the weather warms, begin a regular watering schedule, especially for newly planted seeds and seedlings that require consistent moisture to germinate and grow.

By diligently following these tasks, gardeners in Bedford can ensure their gardens are robust, healthy, and ready for the coming growth season. April’s efforts lay the groundwork for a lush and productive garden.
