Before Detroit became synonymous with automobiles, Cleveland was leading the charge.

The Bedford Historical Society Speaker Series, in partnership with the City of Bedford, will host a special presentation titled “Cleveland: The Car Capital of the World” on Friday, March 13, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ellenwood Center Gym, 124 Ellenwood Ave., Bedford.

The program will be presented by the Western Reserve Historical Society, taking audiences on a journey through Cleveland’s automotive golden age.

At the turn of the 20th century, Cleveland stood at the forefront of the American automobile revolution. Long before Detroit rose to prominence, Cleveland and the Western Reserve were home to dozens of innovative automobile manufacturers whose ideas and engineering helped shape the future of transportation.

Attendees will discover a remarkable array of locally built vehicles that defined performance, reliability, and engineering excellence. From luxury automobiles to groundbreaking commercial vehicles, Cleveland-made cars once traveled roads across the nation and around the world, leaving a lasting imprint on American industry and innovation.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served, and donations are appreciated to support the Bedford Historical Society Speaker Series. The series is supported in part by residents of Cuyahoga County through public grant funding from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, car lover, or simply curious about Cleveland’s surprising role in shaping the automotive world, this promises to be an engaging and educational evening.
