February may bring bitter cold, but that doesn’t mean we have to stay cooped up all month. There are still fun and safe ways to get outdoors—even if it’s just for a few minutes at a time. Here are some quick, cold-weather-friendly activities to enjoy when temperatures dip but the sunshine calls:

1. Flash Snow Art

Bundle up, grab a spray bottle filled with water and food coloring, and turn your snow-covered yard or sidewalk into a colorful masterpiece! Kids love creating rainbows, hearts, and names in the snow. It’s low-effort and lets you enjoy fresh air in short bursts.

2. Backyard Bird Watching

Set up a small bird feeder near a window and spend 10–15 minutes outside topping it off, observing tracks, or listening to bird calls. February is great for spotting cardinals, chickadees, and woodpeckers. Bring a thermos of hot cocoa and do a “five-bird challenge.”

3. 10-Minute Trail Stop

If you’re near the Bedford Reservation or another local park, take a short trail walk—just 5 minutes out and back is enough to stretch your legs and get a breath of winter air. Stick to paved or packed trails and be cautious of icy patches.

4. Snowball Target Toss

Use a backyard fence, tree, or box as a target and have a quick snowball aim challenge. It’s silly, active, and lasts as long (or short) as you can stand the cold.

Even a few minutes outdoors can lift your mood and keep winter fun. Just be sure to dress in layers, limit exposure, and head back inside when your cheeks get frosty.
