Misplacing a phone, tablet, or laptop can be stressful. Fortunately, many modern devices include built-in tools designed to help you locate them quickly. These features—often called “Find My Device” or “Find My”—can show you where your device is and help protect your information if it’s lost.
Most major technology companies offer this feature. Apple users can use the Find My app, Android devices have Find My Device, and many Windows laptops can be located through a Find My Device setting as well. Once turned on, these tools allow you to see your device’s last known location on a map using another phone, tablet, or computer.
If you misplace your device somewhere in your home, you can often make it play a loud sound—even if the volume was turned down. This can help you locate it quickly between couch cushions or in another room.
If your device is lost outside your home, these tools can also help you lock the device remotely so no one can access your information. In more serious cases, you can even erase the device remotely to protect personal data like photos, emails, and saved passwords.
The key is setting this up before you lose your device. Check your device’s settings and make sure location services and “Find My Device” features are turned on.
Taking a few minutes to enable these tools today can make a big difference if your device ever goes missing.
