One of the simplest tech habits that often goes overlooked is restarting your devices regularly. While it might seem like an unnecessary step, giving your computer, tablet, or smartphone a fresh start once in a while can make a big difference in how well it performs.
Restarting helps clear temporary files and background tasks that may slow things down. It gives your device a chance to install system updates properly, close out unused apps, and refresh its memory. If your computer or phone has been running sluggishly, crashing unexpectedly, or struggling to connect to Wi-Fi, a restart can often resolve the issue without needing any further troubleshooting.
Setting a reminder to restart once a week—especially if you leave devices on all the time—can improve both speed and stability. For smartphones and tablets, you can usually power them down by holding the side button until a prompt appears. On computers, simply select “Restart” from the power menu.
Restarting can also help with security. Many updates and patches that protect your device from online threats don’t fully apply until the system restarts. So if you’ve recently installed updates, don’t delay that reboot.
