Cuyahoga County officials are reminding residents to take extra care when mailing property tax payments, following a recent notice shared by the County on its official Facebook page.

According to the County, changes in United States Postal Service postmark practices mean that postmark dates now reflect when mail is processed by USPS sorting machinery, not necessarily the day an envelope is placed in the mail. Because Ohio law relies on the postmark date to determine whether a payment was made on time, this change could affect taxpayers who mail payments close to the due date.

County officials caution that payments mailed too close to the deadline may be postmarked after the due date, even if they were dropped off earlier, potentially resulting in penalties and interest charges.

To help ensure timely payments, the County recommends that taxpayers:

  • Mail payments earlier than usual to allow additional processing time
  • Request a hand-stamped postmark at the Post Office counter when mailing in person
  • Use alternative payment methods, such as online or in-person options
