BEDFORD HEIGHTS, OH — As reported by Fox8 News, a Bedford Heights man has been sentenced to prison after a disturbing case of animal abuse was caught on video earlier this year.
On May 7, security cameras at a local apartment complex recorded Devonta Staten attacking his 2-year-old pit bull mix, India. The footage showed him throwing the dog down a stairwell and later dragging and slamming her against a wall. The video was described by police as deeply troubling and difficult to watch.
Staten was initially arraigned on a not guilty plea but later changed his plea to guilty in August. On Tuesday, a judge sentenced him to six months in prison for the attack.
Following the incident, the dog was taken to a city-run kennel shared by Bedford Heights and Bedford. She was later adopted by Bedford Police Chief Michael Stask, who renamed her Baylin. Stask brought Baylin to the sentencing, where he shared that the dog now suffers from frequent seizures linked by veterinarians to the trauma she endured. Despite her suffering, Baylin has been described as gentle and affectionate.
Staten expressed remorse during the hearing, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation and its lasting consequences on his life.
Baylin remains under veterinary care and requires heavy medication to manage her seizures. While the case highlights the harm she endured, her adoption ensures she is now living in a safe and caring environment.
