February 1, 1930 – June 21, 2025
Genevieve Mae Nick, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, at the age of 95.
Born on February 1, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, Genevieve was the daughter of Lawrence and Bessie Kennedy. She was raised in Bedford, where she graduated from Bedford High School. In 1955, she followed the love of her life, Denny Nick, to Germany during his military service — a testament to their unwavering bond. The two were married for 64 years until Denny’s passing. In 1957, they settled in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where they raised their family and created a home full of warmth, laughter, and a competitive game of cards. In 2015, Genevieve and Denny relocated to Virginia to be closer to their growing family.
Genevieve was known for her poise, grace, and timeless style — always dressed and ready for anything. But beneath the polished exterior was a woman who loved deeply and lived fully. She had a passion for fishing, a joy she shared with her family during countless sun-soaked days on the water. Her competitive spirit came out over a deck of cards, and many family memories were made around the table, filled with laughter, playful jabs, and stories that will live on for generations.
She is preceded in death by her husband Denny, her parents Lawrence and Bessie, and her brothers Charles and Arch Kennedy.
She is survived by her daughters, Diana Barfield and Laura Kaufman (Blair); her granddaughters, Julia Hubbard (Ryan) and Kathryn Vasil (David); and her great-grandchildren, Emily Ledger, Denny Ledger, Jake Hubbard, Ben Hubbard, Claire Vasil, and Logan Vasil.
Genevieve’s legacy is one of quiet strength, deep love, and family traditions that will continue through the lives she touched. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont in Genevieve’s memory.
