This past week, Bedford Downtown was pleased to host the One Million Acts of Kindness bus as well as the founder, Bob Votruba. Mr. Votruba was also accompanied by Bogart, a Boston Terrier who serves as the official mascot for One Million Acts of Kindness.

What is One Million Acts of Kindness?

One Million Acts of Kindness is an organization dedicated to spreading awareness about teen and adolescent suicide.

According to the organization’s informational materials, “On average, 4,200 young adults, 14-25 year old lose their lives to suicide every year in the United States. For every one who does, 10 more try.” Mr Votruba hopes that by promoting the idea of performing acts of kindness will help to alleviate the kinds of behaviors that lead to bullying and aggression among children and teens, which is thought to be a leading factor in many teen and adolescent suicide cases.

Mr. Votruba was inspired to start the organization 10 years ago after the Virginia Tech Shooting. Eight years ago he also began starting bike rides to further help promote the mission of One Million Acts of Kindness.

One Million Acts of Kindness Visits Bedford

One Million Acts of Kindness was making a stop in Bedford to wrap up the latest bike ride, which was done in memory of Twinsburg K-9 Officer, Joshua T. Miktarian, who was shot and killed in the line of duty 10 years ago. Bob Botruba (and Bogart) rode 10 hours and visited several of the surrounding areas while completing this particular ride. Over the years the two have completed hundreds of rides all over the US, all with the intent of helping to bring more kindness to the world.

One Million Acts of Kindness Bus

The bright blue One Million Acts of Kindness bus, covered with inspirational quotes, is also in itself quite the call to action to be kinder to your fellow human. The converted school bus has served as the official vehicle for the organization for the full 10 years.

Bob Votruba will be retiring the One Million Acts of Kindness bus soon. But he has enjoyed every minute during his quest to make the word a kinder and more bully free place.
