As reported on Northern Ohio Golf, Day Two of the 2024 Shawnee Hills Championship saw players reclaiming control of the course, vying for top 10 positions to qualify for the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship (GCAC). Excitement buzzed from the range to the first tee and into the clubhouse, with warm weather failing to deter the players’ determination.
Starting the day, 10 players were within four shots of the leaders. Tyler Ankrom, beginning in 24th place, shot a 69 to catapult himself into 6th place, securing his GCAC spot. Andrew Malkus, tied with Tyler after Day One, posted a tournament-low 67, leading the clubhouse and setting the benchmark.
The final group faced off in a tense showdown. David Swab and Rick Deichert began the day tied at 1-under par. David’s strong front nine with two birdies and no bogeys earned him a 33, while Rick’s double-bogey on the fourth hole balanced by a couple of birdies left him even. On the back nine, Rick made two birdies, including one at the 18th, but David’s consistent play and solid back nine secured a two-shot victory.
Ultimately, 12 players from Shawnee Hills qualified for the GCAC at Sleepy Hollow, scheduled for August 9-11. A score of 154 was needed to advance.
