Last year was the 90th anniversary of the Bedford Garden Club. To commemorate the anniversary, The Bedford Garden Club commissioned an art fence to go around the garden behind the Bedford Historical Garden. While the fence was unveiled in November, it was unveiled incomplete. On Sunday, April 8th, 2018, the final pieces, the metal medallions that were designed by Bedford High School students and cut by Brian Migchelbrink, were unveiled.
Six steel medallions were hung on the fence. Each medallion depicts a different aspect of Bedford history, such as the Viaduct and a stylized Spirit of ’76. The medallions were designed by Bedford High School art students:
- Amir Doss
- Steven Miller
- Kendall Minner
- Michael Stephens
- Kaitlyn Walker
Artist Paula St. John, a long-time Bedford Resident, also helped with the design of the medallions.
The medallion unveiling was done in conjunction with the Bedford Historical Society Open House. On hand for the unveiling was many members of the Bedford garden Club, including Jeanne Sapier, the current president of the club, and Joyce Daunch, president of the club during its 90th anniversary year. Also in attendance were Bedford councilpeople Sandy Spinks (W1), Walter Genutis (W2) and Heather Rhoades (W5). Bedford Heights councilwoman Kay Gary (W4) also attended.
The art fence was designed and constructed by blacksmith artist, Ken Roby. Gary Barnhardt and Steve Sladek also contributed to the design and construction of the fence.
The Bedford Garden Club art fence was made possible by generous donations from the following organizations and people:
- Gardening Know How
- Anonymous
- Ohio Arts Council
- T’s Painting and Sandblasting
- The Bedford Historical Society
- Petro Metal Services
- The City of Bedford
- Coventry Steel Company
- Bedford High School Art-4
The Bedford Garden Club would like to invite all Bedford residents to come visit the Bedford Historical Society garden and enjoy the beautiful art fence and the garden.

I would love to visit. However, the author never tells us where the garden is located.
