For 20 years, Spirit Apotheosis has been a familiar and welcoming part of downtown Bedford, offering herbs, teas, crystals, books, candles, and conversation to generations of customers. This year, the longtime small business celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of growth, resilience, and community connection.

The business first began in 2003 while the owners, Matthew & Melissa Stewart, were living in Lakewood. Starting small, they sold herbs, handmade dream pillows, incense blends, and bath salts to local shops and at events. After visiting Bedford during Christmas in Bedford Falls, they realized Broadway could become the perfect home for the business they had been building together.

Their first storefront opened at 664 Broadway Ave. on May 5, 2006. With help from family and a determination to make their dream work, the couple built the business from the ground up. Over the years, the shop evolved alongside downtown Bedford itself, eventually expanding and later moving into its current location across the street at 691 Broadway Ave.

Originally known as Spirit Apothecary, the business later became Spirit Apotheosis following changes to state regulations regarding the use of the word “apothecary.” While the name changed, the atmosphere and spirit of the shop remained the same. The owners describe it as “an herbal shop with a metaphysical flare,” combining medicinal herbs and teas with crystals, candles, books, and other unique finds that have made the store a destination for many throughout Northeast Ohio.

Over the past two decades, one of the most meaningful parts of the journey has been the relationships formed along the way. The couple spoke warmly about watching customers grow up, return as adults, and eventually bring children of their own into the shop.

Even after 20 years, the owners say they are still grateful to be part of Bedford and proud to have created a space where people from all walks of life feel welcome. For many residents, Spirit Apotheosis has become more than just a shop — it has become part of the heart and character of downtown Bedford itself.
