This year marks a significant milestone for Bedford Safety Town as they celebrate our 60th anniversary! Since its inception, Safety Town has been dedicated to providing essential safety education to young children, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills to navigate the world safely.
Originally established by a police officer in Mansfield, Safety Town was brought to an international level in 1964 by Dorothy Chlad, a pre-school teacher from Bedford, with the support of the Bedford City Schools Board of Education. Over the past six decades, our program has been instrumental in teaching five and six-year-olds crucial safety topics, including stranger safety, poison safety, fire safety, and much more.
Led by head teacher Shawn Smith, a fifth-grade teacher for Bedford City Schools, this year’s program runs from June 5th to June 18th, culminating in a graduation ceremony. The graduation will be followed by a celebration featuring a guest appearance by Dorothy Chlad herself. We offer two convenient sessions, from 9-11 am and 6-8 pm, making it accessible for families with different schedules. The program is affordable, with a fee of only $35 for Bedford residents and $45 for those outside the Bedford City School district.
A special thank you to the Bedford Council of PTAs for their sponsorship and to Chrissy Browning for overseeing all behind-the-scenes work and sign-ups. Don’t miss out on this valuable opportunity to equip your children with essential safety knowledge. Sign up today through the Bedford Safety Town Facebook page and be part of their special 60th-anniversary celebration!
