June in Bedford brings longer days, bright sunshine, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beauty of summer. With school out and children looking for things to do, this month’s craft is a perfect way to keep little hands busy while creating something cheerful for the home. Let’s make DIY summer suncatchers!

These colorful decorations catch the sunlight and brighten windows, porches, and sunrooms all season long.

Supplies:

  • Clear contact paper
  • Construction paper or cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Tissue paper in bright colors
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon or string

Instructions:

Cut a large shape from the center of a piece of cardstock, leaving a border around the edge. Popular summer shapes include suns, butterflies, flowers, dragonflies, or even ice cream cones.

Place a piece of contact paper sticky-side up behind the opening. Then fill the opening with small pieces of colorful tissue paper. Once you’re happy with the design, place a second piece of contact paper over the top to seal everything in place.

Trim any excess contact paper, punch a hole at the top, and tie on a ribbon for hanging.

How Younger Kids Can Help:
Preschoolers and younger elementary-aged children can tear tissue paper into pieces and stick them onto the contact paper. They’ll love choosing colors and watching the sunlight shine through their creations.

How Older Kids Can Participate:
Older children can create more detailed designs, cut their own shapes, or make themed suncatchers inspired by nature, summer vacations, or favorite animals.

Hang your finished suncatchers in a sunny window and enjoy the colorful display. It’s a simple, inexpensive craft that brings a little extra sunshine into your Bedford home all summer long.
