By late September in Bedford, fall has officially arrived. The mornings have a little chill, the evenings come sooner, and before long we’ll start seeing more color in the trees. This is when I finally give myself permission to bring autumn into the house — although, my dears, we don’t need a pumpkin on every available surface!

Start by adding texture. A soft throw across the back of the sofa, a woven basket beside a chair, or a few heavier pillow covers can make a room feel warmer without changing everything. Look around your own closets first. You may already have just what you need.

Next, bring in a few natural touches. Small branches, dried grasses, pinecones, acorns, and interesting leaves can make lovely displays. Place them in a ceramic pitcher, wooden bowl, or glass vase you already own.

This is also the season for warmer lighting. As daylight fades earlier, table and floor lamps make rooms feel especially inviting. Flameless candles are another easy way to add a cozy glow.

In the kitchen or dining room, try a simple bowl of apples or pears, a small arrangement of mums, or perhaps one or two little pumpkins or gourds. There’s no need to cover every countertop.

Finally, think about your home’s entryway. A fall wreath, fresh doormat, or pot of mums near the door gives the whole house a seasonal welcome.

Fall decorating doesn’t have to happen all at once. Let your home change along with Bedford outside the window — a little warmer, a little cozier, and ready for the beautiful weeks ahead.
