Summer is the season for backyard barbecues, graduation parties, family reunions, and neighborhood gatherings. When guests begin to arrive and the driveway fills up, it can be tempting to create a few extra parking spaces by pulling onto the grass.
However, the City of Bedford says that is not permitted.
Among the city’s frequently asked parking questions is a simple one: “Can I park my vehicle on the lawn/grass?” The City’s answer is equally straightforward: “No. Vehicles may be parked on an approved driveway surface or on the street where parking is permitted.”
In other words, vehicles should be parked on a paved, approved driveway or in a location where on-street parking is legally allowed. The City’s published guidance does not distinguish between short-term and long-term parking on the lawn.
If you’re planning a gathering and anticipate additional vehicles, it’s worth thinking about parking ahead of time. Guests should use available driveway space or park legally on nearby streets where parking is permitted. Residents should also remember that Bedford generally prohibits overnight street parking between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
For situations such as overnight guests or driveway maintenance, the City notes that temporary overnight parking exemptions may be available through the Bedford Police Department. Requests must be made in advance, are handled on a day-by-day basis, and are subject to approval.
Knowing the rules before your next summer gathering can help avoid confusion and keep vehicles parked safely and legally. A little planning goes a long way toward making sure the focus stays on enjoying time with family and friends rather than dealing with an unexpected parking issue.
