Over the past several weeks, a lot has been happening inside our future home in downtown Bedford.

We’ve been working through the physical buildout of the market: refinishing floors, building out the checkout area, preparing shelving and food displays, bringing refrigeration equipment into the space, and working through the infrastructure needed to open a real neighborhood food market. We’re also moving forward with plans for SNAP acceptance and exploring what it will take to offer fresh, healthy prepared foods alongside produce, meat, dairy, baked goods, bulk foods, local products and everyday groceries.

Thank you to everyone who has donated money, materials, expertise, or time to help get us this far. We have plans for a Founders Wall inside the market to recognize the people who stepped up early and helped make Lake Effect Market possible.

Just as important, people in the community have started telling us what they want.

About two dozen people have already completed our community survey. Fresh fruits and vegetables, locally grown and produced foods, meat, dairy, eggs, baked goods and prepared foods are all showing strong interest. Affordability and access to fresh, good-quality food are coming through clearly as priorities.

If you live in Bedford or the surrounding area, we’d really like to hear from you.

Fresh produce? Local meat and dairy? Prepared meals? Bulk foods? Bakery? Natural foods? Everyday staples? What would you actually buy, and what would make you choose a neighborhood market?

Your answers are helping us make real decisions about what goes into the store, including refrigeration, kitchen capabilities, product selection and future programs.

We also want to thank everyone who has already stepped into this project. People have volunteered, shared ideas, completed surveys, introduced us to local producers, followed the work, and contributed financially. Our founding supporters in particular helped turn Lake Effect Market from an idea into something that is now physically taking shape downtown.

That community involvement matters. This market is being built with Bedford, and we want the decisions we make now to reflect what people here will actually use.

And if you’ve already completed it, thank you. Sharing it with another Bedford-area household is one of the most useful things you can do right now.
