  • July 24, 1911: American archaeologist Hiram Bingham III rediscovered Machu Picchu, the Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru. The site is now one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • July 25, 1956: The Italian ocean liner SS Andrea Doria collided with the MS Stockholm in heavy fog 45 miles (72 km) south of Nantucket Island. The Andrea Doria sank the next day, resulting in the deaths of 51 people.
  • July 26, 1953: The start of the Cuban Revolution. Fidel Castro and his supporters attacked the Moncada Barracks in an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the government of Fulgencio Batista. Despite their failure, the event galvanized the movement that ultimately ousted Batista in 1959.
  • July 28, 1914: World War I began when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo the previous month. This marked the start of one of the deadliest conflicts in human history.
  • July 30, 1965: U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law, providing millions of elderly Americans with health insurance. The law reshaped the U.S. health care system and has had a lasting impact on American society.

Cleveland History

  • July 24, 1931: The Cleveland Municipal Stadium, one of the first multipurpose stadiums in the United States, was opened. It was home to the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns for many years.
  • July 25, 1954: The “Miracle of Richfield” happened when the Cleveland Indians overcame an 11-run deficit to defeat the Baltimore Orioles, which is one of the greatest comebacks in baseball history.
  • July 28, 1949: The first nighttime baseball game at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium took place. This was a significant moment in the history of the Cleveland Indians and major league baseball as a whole.
  • July 29, 2002: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland initiated the “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll”, an exhibition that displays the most influential songs in the history of rock and roll.
  • July 30, 1952: The Republican National Convention commenced in Cleveland, marking the last time a major political convention was held in the city until the Republicans returned for their convention in 2016.
