Spring has sprung in Bedford and Ward 5 is looking forward to a busy, busy time.

First of all, I would like to remind everyone in Ward 5 that our Ward meeting is coming up on April 9th. We will be discussing many exciting things that will be happening in Bedford.

Second, I wanted to let everyone know that Ellenwood Recreation Center will be closed just a little longer than was expected. They found additional asbestos in the ceiling which will require more time for removal. I want to remind everyone that asbestos removal is not the only thing that is happening while Recreation Center is closed. Exciting changes are coming to Ellenwood and the Recreation Department in general. Ellenwood will be getting a complete facelift, including new paint and new lighting. The Recreation Department is feverishly working on getting a new registration system up and running as well. This system will allow Bedford residents to both register and pay online! This is an upgrade that is long overdue and one that I am personally excited about.

Speaking of registration, don’t forget to register for Baseball, Softball and Basketball. Registration is currently taking place at City Hall as Ellenwood is closed.

The Bedford Playground Program is also open for registration. This year, the Bedford Playground Program will be taking children from other cities as well as Bedford residents, so if your son or daughter has a cousin or friend that they would like to be in the program together, they can do that now. The program is $500 for 9 weeks and is well worth the money. It is open to children 5-12 years old and includes lunch daily, weekly field trips and weekly pool visits. The camp runs from 9am-4pm on weekdays in the summer but before and after care is available for an additional fee. My own son participates in this program and he loves it. Skip the expensive daycare and sign up today for Bedford’s Playground Program.

And last of all, a quick update on Dollar General. You may have noticed that they have been working like busy little beavers over there. They are aiming for an opening date of April 15th. April 15th is tax day too, so make sure you get those Bedford tax returns in before that day as well. Municipal tax help is available now through Tax Day at City Hall Monday through Friday 8am-5pm and Saturday 9am-1pm.

That’s all for this month. Remember, if you have any questions or issues about what’s happening in Bedford, you can always call me at 440-227-3620 or heather@bedfordward5.com.
