Cleveland Arena Closes (May 17, 1974): Cleveland Arena, one of the city’s most important sports and entertainment venues, officially closed after nearly four decades of operation. The arena hosted the Cleveland Barons, early Cavaliers games, major concerts, boxing matches, and countless civic events.

Hessler Street Fair Returns (May 17–18, 2008): The historic Hessler Street Fair resumed in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood after a long hiatus. Originally launched in 1969, the festival became a major symbol of neighborhood preservation, local arts, and counterculture in Cleveland history.
