As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026, Bedford is joining communities across the nation in honoring the country’s history, traditions, and spirit through a series of local events and activities planned throughout the year.
One of the first opportunities for residents to participate is the City of Bedford’s ongoing “Stars & Stripes at Home” American Flag Giveaway. The program, which began May 1, allows Bedford residents to receive one free American flag per household through the Bedford Parks & Recreation Department at the Ellenwood Center while supplies last. The initiative is designed to encourage patriotic displays throughout the community as part of the nationwide America 250 celebration.
Residents participating in the giveaway must present proof of residency and either have or create a household account with the Bedford Parks & Recreation Department. Pole and mounting hardware are included, and flags are available to the first 100 households on a first-come, first-served basis.
The flag giveaway is just one part of Bedford’s larger America 250 programming. Upcoming events include the annual Memorial Day Parade on May 25, a Flag Day retirement ceremony during the Strawberry Festival in June, and Liberty Days celebrations planned for July featuring live entertainment, historical programming, family activities, and a community screening of Hamilton.
The City of Bedford has partnered with the America 250-Ohio Commission as communities across the state prepare to commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Local organizers hope the celebration will encourage residents to reflect on Bedford’s own history while also bringing the community together through shared events and traditions.
More information about Bedford’s America 250 activities can be found through the City of Bedford and Bedford Parks & Recreation.
