As reported by WKYC Studios, the Bedford City School District Board of Education has a new member following an appointment by Cuyahoga County Probate Court Judge Anthony Russo.

Michelle Benjamin, a Bedford Heights resident, was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Bedford school board after the board was unable to select a replacement within the 30-day period required by Ohio law. When a school board cannot fill a vacancy in that timeframe, Ohio law allows the probate court to make the appointment.

According to Judge Russo, Benjamin was chosen from a field of 22 applicants. Six candidates were interviewed before the final selection was made.

Russo cited Benjamin’s background in nursing, community service, and student mentoring as key factors in the decision. She is also the parent of three children who have attended or currently attend Bedford City Schools.

The appointment was made at the request of the Bedford Board of Education after board members were unable to reach a decision on filling the vacant seat themselves.

Benjamin will join the board as it continues to address district priorities and ongoing challenges facing Bedford City Schools.
