GARFIELD HEIGHTS – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is proposing to replace the pavement on I-490 between the I-90/I-490/I-71 interchange and the area just west of E. 55th St. where the Opportunity Corridor begins. The project proposes full depth reconstruction of I-490 for 2.3 miles, including drainage, lighting, and signage improvements. The proposed project also includes the reconstruction of the interchange ramps at I-71, I-77, W. 7th St., and Broadway Ave.
The project is scheduled to start construction June 1 and will end on Sept. 30, 2026. The estimated construction cost is $48.5 million.
Minor work to the bridge over the Cuyahoga River is also proposed. This would include work to the bridge deck, approach slab, drainage system, expansion joints, and painting of certain structural steel elements. Minor utility work is also anticipated.
Two lanes of traffic in each direction on I-490 will be maintained throughout construction, and the closing of various ramps is expected.
Temporary and permanent right-of-way will be required adjacent to the I-490 bridge over the Cuyahoga River and Industrial Flats.
A small amount of suitable wooded bat habitat is expected to be impacted by the project; however, any necessary tree removal will occur between October 1 and March 31 to protect these species during their summer roosting period. No impacts to the Cuyahoga River are anticipated. The project is not expected to have any hazardous materials or cultural resource impacts.
