  • September 4, 476 AD: The traditional date for the fall of the Western Roman Empire. On this day, Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, was deposed by the Germanic King Odoacer.
  • September 5, 1972: The Munich Massacre occurred during the Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. A Palestinian terrorist group, Black September, took 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team hostage, eventually resulting in their deaths.
  • September 6, 1522: The Spanish ship Victoria, commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano (after Ferdinand Magellan’s death in the Philippines), returned to Spain. This marked the completion of the first known successful circumnavigation of the Earth.
  • September 8, 1900: The Galveston Hurricane, one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history, struck Galveston, Texas. The storm resulted in the deaths of an estimated 8,000 to 12,000 people.
  • September 9, 1947: The first computer bug was recorded. Grace Hopper, an American computer scientist, and her team found a moth inside a relay of the Harvard Mark II computer. The incident was amusingly documented, leading to the use of the term “bug” for computer glitches.

Cleveland History

  • September 4, 1916: The Cleveland Indians played their first game at Dunn Field (later renamed League Park II). This ballpark was their primary playing venue until they moved to Cleveland Municipal Stadium in the 1930s.
  • September 5, 1901: The first electric streetcar route operated by the Cleveland Electric Railway began, transforming public transportation in the city.
  • September 7, 1896: The Euclid Beach Park opened. This amusement park, located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, became one of the most popular leisure destinations in the Cleveland area until its closure in 1969.
  • September 8, 1921: The luxurious Hotel Cleveland (later renamed the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel) opened its doors. Located downtown, it remains one of the city’s most iconic buildings.
  • September 10, 1960: The Cleveland Browns defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in their first game after joining the NFL from the former American Football League (AFL). This marked the beginning of a successful decade for the Browns in their new league.
